BEATRICE A. “BETTY” FEY [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Beatrice “Betty” Ashworth Fey, 88, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Golden Living Center where she had resided for over five years.

Born Jan. 29, 1925, at the Ainsworth Arms Hotel, the home of her maternal grandparents, in Bolton, Lancashire, England, Mrs. Fey was the daughter of the late Harold Ashworth and Beatrice (Smith) Ashworth. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, George C. Fey, Jr., Dec. 23, 1972; her grandson, Shawn David Miltenberger; son-in-law, William Michael Shipley; a nephew, Greg Landis; a niece, Sydney Landis; a brother-in-law, Richard Smouse Fey and his wife, Mary Louise Bender; and two half brothers-in-law, Frederick Monroe Fey and Phillip Scott Fey.

Betty came to the United States in 1925, as an infant when her father came from the British Celanese Corporation to join the staff at Amcelle Plant of Celanese Corporation of America. Betty lived in LaVale as a child and went to the LaVale School and graduated from Allegany High School, Class of 1942.

Betty eloped with her sweetheart, George Charles Fey, Jr., at the age of sixteen. They were married at the Evangelical Reformed Church, Winchester, Va. She became a naturalized citizen at the age of 21, Dec. 11, 1946. Betty was co-owner of Tom's Cleaners with her husband, George, until his death. Betty retired from the WMHS-Memorial Hospital as a unit secretary on 4-East and later as Nursing Staff Coordinator.

Betty was a life-member of the Emanuel Episcopal Church; a former member of the Altar Ward; Saint Catherine’s Circle; and the Embroidery Group. She was also a member the Women's Civic Club; the McKinley Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star; the Ladies Optimist Club where she served as president at the same time George, her late husband, was president of the Bedford Road Optimist Club. Betty served as Girl Scout leader at Gephart Elementary School and was active in the Gephart P.T.A. She belonged to the Card Club for years. Betty also became a member of the Centre Street Methodist Church in later years. She read to her daughter’s, Dianne, second grade class at Parkside Elementary School.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Beatrice Pamela Fey Moss and her husband, Stuart, Towson, Dianne Fey-Miltenberger and her husband, David, Cumberland, and Suzanne Fey-Shipley, Dur-ham, N.C. She is also survived by her sisters, Doreen Pamela Ashworth Landis and her husband, Harry, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Jason M. Miltenberger, Rebecca D. Miltenberger, Jennie E. Sefcik and husband, Nicholas, Jessica Suzanne Shipley-Watson and her husband, Frank, Laurie Beth Shipley, and William Shipley, her great-grandchildren, Bailey Watson, Caden Watson, and Ethan Shipley; her niece, Mary Beth Fey Botsford; her half sisters-in-law, Marian Annette Fey Deahl and Kathy Ayers Fey Shelly.

Betty was also preceded in death by her second husband, James H. Brant, Sr.; a brother-in-law, George Brant and wife, Ginnie; and two sisters-in-law, Marianne Neff and Doris Jean Nee. Betty also leaves behind her stepson, James H. Brant, Jr., and his wife, Karen, LaVale; and her stepdaughter, Sue Ellen Willison, Cumberland; her step-granddaughters, Amanda Brant, Christine Wharton, and Brittany Brant; and a half sister-in-law, Alice Hershiser, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, from 2 to 4 and  6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Emanuel Episcopal Church on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Edward “Bo” C. Chapman officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
