CUMBERLAND — Phyllis Mary (Brown) McWhirter, 88, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at the Allegany Health, Nursing & Rehab Center.
Born Nov. 23, 1924, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Earl R. Brown and Margaret (Farrell) Brown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James C. McWhirter; a son, Michael T. McWhirter; two daughters, Judith Ann McWhirter and Margaret “Margie” McWhir-ter and two brothers, Earl and Robert Brown.
Mrs. McWhirter graduated from Girls Central in 1943 and the Allegany Hospital School of Nursing in 1946.
She had been employed as a Registered Nurse at Moores-ville V.A. Hospital, Mooresville, N.C.; Blodgett Memorial Hospital, Grand Rapids, Mich. and retired after 28 years of service at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish-St. Patrick’s, Cumberland.
Phyllis was an avid bowler and enjoyed being on three leagues, Senior Citizens League at White Oaks Lanes, AARP and Friday Antiques Leagues at The Bowler.
Survivors include her son, Patrick J. McWhirter and wife Beverly, of Ridgeley, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Colleen Pritchard, and husband Sam, of Austin, Texas, Katie McWhirter, of Austin, Texas, Mitchell McWhirter, of Ridgeley, W.Va. and Alison Humphrey and husband Chris, of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a great-granddaughter, Adaline Humphrey, of Fort Ashby, W.Va.; two nieces, Kim Lewis and Christine Driver; two nephews, James and Thomas Brown; life-long friend, Jane McCreary and fellow nurses, Helen Williams and Frances Miller.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, St. Patrick’s, Cumberland, on Monday at 10 a.m.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
