FROSTBURG — Derek Michael “Huck” Monahan, 69, of Frostburg, passed away at his home with his wife Sandy at his side on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, after a five month battle with cancer.
Born July 27, 1943, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Edward and Rose E. (Miller) Monahan.
Derek was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Frostburg. He had been a plumber in Frostburg for 49 years and having owned his own business for 36 years. It was a profession that he loved to do and always felt he was helping a lot of people that needed his services any time, day or night, Sundays and holidays. He was a wonderful husband and friend to his wife Sandy for 42 years of marriage and a good buddy to his many friends. He loved watching sunsets, the local wildlife visiting his feeders and most of all to hear the Canadian Geese fly over. His hobbies included golfing, fishing and bowling with his good buddies and long time friends.
He is survived by his wife Sandy; brother, Dennis Monahan and wife Susan, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two nephews, Shawn Monahan and Shane Monahan and wife Andi and their sons, River and Castle; uncle Mark Miller, of Cabot, Pa.; two aunts, Francis Michel and husband Jim, of Grantsville and Joann Barnard, of Lonaconing; two sisters-in-law, Patsy Carter and her daughter Debbie Marsh and granddaughter Kelley Marsh, Peggy Knight and husband Richard and their son Randy and wife Annette, grandson Marshall and their daughter, Crista Knight.
Derek’s family wishes to thank all of the many people who prayed for him non-stop and who have been sending many well wishes since this began back in August and thank you to all who have helped in so many ways with anything that needed done. A special thank you to our wonderful neighbors.
Derek will be missed so much by all of the many people who loved him so dearly, especially his furry buddy, Sunny and his wife Sandy, for they have been inseparable for 50 years. “Until we meet again honey.”
Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, from 2 to 6 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Frostburg, on Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. with Father Ed Hendricks as celebrant.
The family would like to invite you to a luncheon following the service at St. Michael’s Church Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed towards the Allegany County Animal Shelter, 716 Furnace St., Cumberland, MD 21502 or to The Ark of Hope Rescue, 13400 Arctic Ridge Lane, Oldtown, MD 21555; for Derek’s love of animals.
