ROMNEY, W.Va. — Eugene Wakeman Grapes, 88, of Romney, W.Va., passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital.
Born on Oct. 21, 1924, in Higginsville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Virgil and Flo (Cheshire) Grapes. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Louise (Shairman) Grapes in 1968; a daughter, Patty McCauley; a son, James Orr; six brothers, Hugh, Kelly, Tom, Cleo, Leo and Edgar “Shorty” Grapes and two sisters, Opal Heavner and Maude Thorp.
Gene owned and operated Grapes Trucking Co. He retired from Hampshire County Board of Education as a school bus driver after 31 years of service in June 1986. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a charter member of the Jersey Mt. Ruritan. He was a army veteran of World War II in the South Pacific where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Surviving is his wife, Ruth Catherine (Kesner) Grapes; six children, Linda Baker and husband Dick, Charles “Bucky” Wilson and wife Judy, Norman Wilson and wife Linda, all of Romney, Richard Grapes, of Hagerstown and Iva Saville and husband Gary, of Augusta; two brothers, Neil Grapes, of Romney and Olyn Grapes, of Wilmington, Del.; a sister, Enid Saville, of Romney; fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the Christ Community Church, Augusta, with Pastor Kenneth Caplinger and Pastor Don Kesner officiating.
Interment will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney, W.Va.
