FROSTBURG — Iola “Nancy” Virginia Magruder, 90, of Frostburg, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born March 31, 1920, in Damascus, was the daughter of the late Joseph William Clay and Grace Virginia (Warfield) Clay. Nancy was also preceded in death by her husband Samuel Wade Magruder; and one sister, Ruby Purdum.
Mrs. Magruder graduated from Damascus High School and Towson State College with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She also received a Masters in Education from the University of Maryland.
When World War II began, Nancy went to Sweetwater, Texas, for training to become a member of the W.A.S.P. (Women’s Airforce Service Pilots). This organization was responsible to fly small aircraft in the United States while the male pilots were fighting the war overseas. She received the United States Congressional Medal of Honor in March 2010.
In the mid-1990’s, Nancy moved to Frostburg, to be near her eldest child and grandchildren. For the past four years, she has resided at Devlin Manor Health Care Center in Cumberland.
Mrs. Magruder is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Arnone of Frostburg and Katharine Magruder of Fredrick; two grandchildren, Katrina Opel and Lynn Hovatter, both of Frostburg; four great-grandchildren, Seth Arnone, Dylan Hunt, Rylee Hovatter, and Chase Opel. She is also survived by her sister, Hilda Wells of Sparks.
Friends will be received at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home in Damascus, for visitation on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral services on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Rockville.
