ROMNEY, W.Va. — Douglas William Rannells, 71, of Romney, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.
Born Jan. 14, 1942 to the late William B. and Jean Taylor Rannells, Doug graduated from Romney High School in 1960. He spent his career working for Western Union Telephone and Telegraph and the various phone companies servicing Hampshire, Hardy and Mineral Counties and knew every highway and back road in the area. He retired from Frontier Telecommunications in 2007.
He married Sandra Long in 1974 and they lived in Fort Ashby, W.Va., for almost 30 years. They moved back to her homeplace on Camp Cliffside Road in 2004. She passed away a few months later after a long battle with cancer. He moved into Romney in 2008.
Doug was a life long member of the Romney United Methodist Church, an active member of the Romney Masonic Lodge, Ali Ghan Shrine and President of the Shrine Motor Corps in Cumberland, and the Romney Order of Moose.
He is survived by his sister, Trudy Rannells Seita and her husband, Charles of Vienna, W.Va.; a niece, Kathryn Lengyel (Craig) and their three children of Dallas, Texas; and nephew, Chip Seita (Nichole) and their two children, Vienna. He is also survived by Linda Springs of Romney, his wonderful special friend of seven years, her children and grandchildren, who brought so much joy into his life.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 at Shaffer Funeral Home, 230 East Main St., Romney. Friends will be received one hour prior to the services.
