FLINTSTONE — Donald W. Smith, 69, of Flintstone, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at his home.
Born Aug. 31, 1943, in Flintstone, he was the son of the late Ellery Donald Smith and Ethel May (Shipley) Smith. He was also preceded in death by one niece, Nanci Smith Yonker; four nephews, Eddie Smith, Brian Smith, Lynn Smith and Billy Smith; a brother-in-law, Richard “Dick” Hess Sr. and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Richard E. Mallow and Dessie R. Mallow.
He graduated from Flintstone High School and The North American School of Conservation.
Mr. Smith had served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam Era.
He retired from the State of Maryland, having been a park technician at Green Ridge State Forest and Rocky Gap State Park.
Mr. Smith had previously belonged to the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 271; the Cumberland Outdoor Club and Gold Star Post 6452, V.F.W., Ridgeley, W.Va.
Mr. Smith is a life-member of the Flintstone Volunteer Fire Company, North American Hunting Club, and Fort Cumberland Post 13, American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Wanda I. (Mallow) Smith; his son, Andrew P. Smith, of Flintstone; one sister, Louise Hess, of Flintstone; four brothers, George E. Smith, and wife Carol, of Artemas, Pa., Frank D. Smith and wife Janet, Paul E. Smith and wife Linda and Larry R. Smith and wife JoAnn, all of Flintstone; a sister-in-law, Candie S. Paugh and husband Jake, of Artemas, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Gary E. Mallow and wife Breanda, of Clearville, Pa., and several nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Funeral Service, P.A., Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Church Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Serving as pallbearers will be Robert “Bobby” Hess, Richard “Dickie” Hess, Delton Smith, Darran Smith, Richard Smith and Donald “Donny” May.
