CHARLES W. “BILL” DUNNINGTON [Daytona Beach Shores, Fla.]

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. — Charles William “Bill” Dunnington, 85, of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla., formerly of Fairmont, W.Va., passed after a courageous battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012.

He was born June 26, 1927 in Mannington, W.Va., a son of the  Bremer and Jessie Edith Church Dunnington. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Marcia J. Cross Dunnington, who died on Oct. 14, 2001; a sister, Eva Dunnton Irimie and two brothers, Howard and George Dunnington.

Survivors include his second wife, Freda Myers-Dunnington, of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla.; three sons, Greg and his wife Dama Dunnington, of Jacksonville, Fla., Randy Dunnington, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Marty and his wife Amy Dunnington, of Cumberland; four step-children, Diane and her husband Houston Weems, of Smithfield, N.C., Linda Stepaniak, of Gainesville, Fla., William Paul and his wife Judy Stepaniak, of Jacksonville, Fla., and John Michael and his wife Samatha Stepaniak, of Largo, Fla.; three grandchildren, Ashleigh Dunnington and Gregory Dunnington Jr., both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Matthew Dunnington, of Cumberland; two step-grandchildren, Randi Staf-ford, of Aurora, Colo. and Garrett Appel, of Cumberland; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn DeCarlo, of Monongah, W.Va. and Connie Rexrode, of Parkersburg, W.Va.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dunnington was a member of Central Christian Church in Fairmont, W.Va. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific aboard the LST-272 (Gray Raider). He was a member of Fairmont Elks Lodge 294, where he had served many chairs including Exaulted Ruler, District Deputy to the Grand Exaulted Ruler, and State President the West Virginia Elks Association. He was also a member of the Fairmont Post #17 American Legion and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 629. Mr. Dunnington was a graduate of Mannington High School where he played football for the Big Green that went undefeated. After returning from the war, he attended Fairmont State College where he resumed playing football. After college, he went to work for Monongahela Power were he retired in 1989, with 38 years of service, holding many positions, he began as a lineman, retiring as a supervisor in the general office in Fairmont, W.Va. Mr. Dunnington was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his family and friends. He also had a love for Fairmont Little League Baseball, where he attended national conferences in Florida in the 1960’s.

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, W.Va., from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Johnna Mansuetto officiating.

Entombment will follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont, W.Va.

The Marion County Veterans will conduct full military rites at the cemetery. An Elks Ritualistic Service will be held in the funeral home Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Gregory Dunnington, Jr., Matthew Dunnington, Garrett Appel, Larry Hamilton, Rick Romino, and Mike Bonbard.
