CRESAPTOWN — Frederick Donald Kreiger Sr., 81, of Cresaptown, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Fred was born May 4, 1930, in Cumberland, the youngest child of William Nelson Kreiger and Celia (Davis) Kreiger.
Fred was a 1948 graduate of Fort Hill High School, where he was a manager of the football squad. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1951, and for many years in the local Seabees Reserve Unit.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Oleta (Conway) Kreiger; his sister, Betty Webster, of Cumberland; daughter, Sue Vetrano, of North Potomac; son, Fred Kreiger Jr. and wife Susan Kreiger, of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Krista Vetrano, Kara Vetrano, and Kurt Vetrano, of North Potomac, and Fred Kreiger III and Caroline Kreiger, of Hagerstown; and his beloved beagle, Belle.
Fred was employed for many years as a millwright at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. and later retired after being maintenance supervisor at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory. Fred enjoyed all sports and played fast pitch softball in the Rocking Chair League for PPG and in the Pen Mar baseball league as a catcher. He coached his son and daughter in local baseball/softball leagues. Fred coached championship teams for the Cresaptown Eagles in the Pen Mar Little League, Sterling Electric in the high school rec baseball league, and the P.V.A.A. team in the Sugar and Spice softball girl’s league, compiling a 32-1 record and four tournament championships in 1975.
Fred was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. In recent years, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s games and events.
Fred was a longtime builder and shooter of muzzle loading rifles, and devoted much of his life promoting the sport, mentoring younger shooters, and shooting competitively. He was a two-time Pennsylvania State champion in the over 60 division. He was a lifetime member of the Fort Hill Rifle Club, and shot with the Fort Hill Flinters. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA and the Shawnee Rangers Muzzleloaders.
Fred had a great sense of humor, and touched the lives of many young people and friends through athletics, shooting and the workplace. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
