BURLINGTON, W.Va. — Roger Dale Canan, 67, of Dry Run Road, Burlington, W.Va., died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at his residence while under the care of Mountain Hospice.
Born on Aug. 22, 1945, at Burlington, W.Va., he was a son of the late Marvin Edward and Etta Mae (Smith) Canan. He also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Christina Canan; a son, Brian Canan; a sister, Betty Lou Wolford and a brother-in-law, Harwell Heishman.
Mr. Canan was retired as a supervisor of the equipment department with the West Virginia Division of Highways with over 25 years of service and was co-owner and operator with his father of the Burlington Exxon Station in the 1970's. He was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department and the Burlington Ruritan Club.
Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Joyce E. (McKenzie) Canan; five sons, Kenneth R. Canan, of Keyser, W.Va., Christopher D. Canan and wife Sharon, of Romney, W.Va., Phillip M. Canan and partner Tara Dickens, of Antioch, W.Va., Michael Lantz Gordon, of Keyser and Robert Lee Kalbaugh and partner Rayetta O'Brien, of Romney; three brothers, George E. Canan and wife Betty Ann, Marvin Eugene Canan and Robert Stephen Canan and wife Donna, all of Burlington; two sisters, Glenda Mae Canan and partner Freddy Lupton, of Burlington and Barbara Ann Heishman, of Romney; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Burlington Chapel, on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, from noon to 2 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home immediately following the visitation at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Brenda Forren officiating.
Interment will be in the Canan Family Cemetery, Burlington.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to Mountain Hospice, 1600 Crim Ave., Belington, WV 26250.
