LAVALE — George Thomas Stefan, 77, of LaVale, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at his home.
Born April 21, 1935, in Windber, Pa., Mr. Stefan was the son of the late Frank J. Stefan and Verna H. (Hancharik) Stefan. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank R. George; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A graduate of Windber High School, class of 1953, George was a United States Army veteran with two years of service stationed in Germany as a Combat Engineer Specialist. His primary work career was four years at Allegany Ballistic Laboratory as a Draftsman and 35 years at the Kelly-Spring Tire Company retiring in 2000 as an Associate Engineer in Tire Labeling. George was an avid sports fan, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the University of Maryland Terrapins. He was a member of the Church of Saint Patrick and the LaVale Athletic Association as an officer. George managed Little League, Hot Stove, and Rec League Softball Teams.
George is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joan Stefan; his sons, George Stefan and wife, Kelly, Canton, Ohio, Jeffrey Stefan and wife, Caren, Potomac, and Scott Stefan and wife, Kirsten, Crofton; and his daughter, Sharon Guthrie and husband, Jeff, Morgantown, W.Va. He is also survived by his grandchildren who he loved and enjoyed, Brett, Brittany, Brian, Justin, Lauren, Courtney, Hanna, Luke, and Alex. George was additionally fond of the family grand dogs.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church Site, on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Father Greg Chervenak, O.F.M. Cap., as celebrant.
Interment will be in Saint John’s Cemetery, Windber.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that a donation be made to the Western Maryland Health System Hospice Services, 1050 West Industrial Boulevard, Cumberland, MD 21502 (www.wmhsshopping.com/donation).
