KEYSER, W.Va. — Robert “Pingly” Shank, 87, of Rt. 4, Keyser, W.Va., died on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born on Jan. 4, 1925 in Keyser, he was a son of the late Raymond Dale and Marie Frances (Leary) Shank. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Randy Biser and a brother, Charles Raymond Shank.
“Pingly” was a 1944 graduate of Keyser High School and played on Tack Clark’s first football team and the 1943 PVC Champions. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, awarded the Purple Heart Medal on May 4, 1945 in the Philippines. He and his wife owned and operated the former Thrift Quality Market on St. Cloud Street, Keyser and was a former employee Anchor Glass Company.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, a life member of Boyce Houser Post 41 American Legion and a life member of Nancy Hanks Post 3518, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Bob enjoyed watching his sons play sports and attended all Keyser High School games. He was a loyal WVU and Redskins fan.
Surviving are his wife of 62 ½ years, Virginia (Blamer) Shank; his children, Barbara L. Biser of Littleton, N.C., Lindy S. Shank and wife Carol of Keyser, Todd M. Shank of Tampa, Fla., and Jerry J. Shank of Richmond, Va.; and his sisters, Connie Pence and husband Bob of Vienna, Va. and Judy Shank of Camp Hill, Pa. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rick Biser and wife Candy, Jennifer Shank, Derek Shank and wife Samantha, Kyle Shank and wife Brittany, Ryan Shank, Madison Shank, C.J. Johnson and wife Jaci, Catina Femi and Jeff Bowling, and seven great-grandchildren, Dustin, Jessica, Allison, Ethan, Stella, Emma and Jade.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Boyce Houser Post 41, American Legion will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted at Calvary United Methodist Church, 233 S. Mineral St., Keyser on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Judi Stump officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.
Interment will follow in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser where military honors will be accorded.
