ROMNEY, W.Va. — Geraldine “Geri” Angeless Alkire, 86, of Romney, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Geri was born on May 11, 1926 in Rochester, Minn., daughter of the late John Bernard and Rosanna Teresa (Hernan) Lowe.
Besides her parents, Geri was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James Philip Alkire; and three sisters. Geri was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Geri was raised in New York City where she met her husband during World War II. They were married on Dec. 23, 1944 and moved to Springfield, W.Va. after the war. She was one of the original members of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Geri was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Wappocoma Post 1101, Romney. She retired from General Telephone Company and also worked as a clerk in the Hampshire County Clerk’s office.
Geri is survived by two sons, James J. Alkire and wife, Sue, Romney and John P. Alkire and wife, Madie, Augusta, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Christina Borg and husband, Jason, Evansville, Ind., Julia Thom and husband, Tony, Germantown, Laura Staley and husband, Scott, Augusta, John Alkire Jr., Augusta, Michael Alkire, Copper Mt., Colo., Rebecca Ann Alkire, Charlotte, N.C., Sharon Campbell and husband, Ben, Markleysburg, Pa., Daniel Alkire and fiancée, Sadie Welburn, Morgantown, W.Va.; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Romney, with Father William J. Kuchinsky officiating.
Interment will be at the Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.
Serving as Pallbearers will be John Alkire Jr., Michael Alkire, Daniel Alkire, Steve Davis, Jason Borg, and Scott Staley.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney.
