CUMBERLAND — William J. “Bill” Hay Sr., 99, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2013 at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home.
Born May 22, 1913 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William N. Hay and Mary Alice (Hook) Hay. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Rose (Grabenstein) Hay; his only son, William J. Hay Jr., in a motorcycle accident in 1971; his brother, Edward L. Hay; his three sisters, Catherine Hay Mace, Alice Hay Carroll, and Agnes Hay; and his son-in-law, Arthur Scott Barncord.
Bill graduated from Allegany High School in 1931 and from Coyne Radio Institute in Chicago. During World War II, Mr. Hay served with the Second Infantry Division in the European Theater. In June, 2001, he was awarded the French Victory Medal for his participation in the Invasion of Normandy. Bill worked for the Queen City Dairy for 31 years and then for Howell Trucking, Inc. He retired in 1976. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains, Saint Mary’s Catholic Parish, the Magicians Alliance of Eastern State, the Internation Brotherhood of Magicians, the Western Maryland Central Labor Council 1855, AARP, and the American Legion Post 13. He was treasurer of the Senior Citizens Club and trustee of the Midland Democrat Club. Mr. Hay was also a magician and an avid chess player.
Surviving are his two daughters, Katherine A. Long and husband Stephen of Murrysville, Pa., and Suzanne M. Barncord of Swan Point; five grandchildren, Lisa Wilson and husband Brett, Cranberry Township, Pa., Scott Hay, New Windsor, Heather Hay, Waynesboro, Pa., Kimberly Barncord, Alexandria Va., and Andrew Barncord, stationed in Biloxi, Miss.; five great-grandchildren, Bradley and Nicole Kreimer, Clark and Mitchell Wilson, and Joseph Hay.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 6 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains, Saint Mary’s Catholic Parish on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Father Bernard Finerty, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant
Inurnment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
