FROSTBURG — Kurt Bayne Detwiler, 50, of Frostburg, died on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2012.
Kurt was an avid cyclist, trail ambassador, and bicycle shop manager; a writer and editor; an author of several Mid-Atlantic bicycling guidebooks; a regular participant in local literary events; a Civil War historian; a neon tubebender; and a contrarian of highest order.
Kurt was born in Camden, N.J., in a hospital overlooking Harleigh Cemetery, where Walt Whitman is buried.
He spent his childhood in Haddonfield, N.J. He attended Carson Long Military Academy, graduated from Haddonfield High School, and studied art history and theology at Gettysburg College. Kurt studied glassblowing with Paul Stankard at the Samuel L. Jones Glass Education Center. He worked at several bike shops, including The Outfitter at Harpers Ferry and Cumberland Trail Connection in Cumberland. He was the past president of the Western Maryland Wheelmen, he was a member of the Thursday night writing group, and he was a member of the Allegany Arts Council.
In addition to his sister, Lee Detwiler and her children, Sam and Ari, Kurt is survived by a wide circle of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Susan and George Detwiler and by his brother, Dirk.
A memorial service will be held at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 at 5 p.m.
