CUMBERLAND — Herbert Francis Dawson, 90, of Cumberland, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at the Allegany Health, Nursing and Rehab Center.
Born Sept. 18, 1922, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Daniel McKinley Dawson and Estelle (Umstot) Dawson. Herb moved to Cumberland when he was very young.
He graduated from Allegany High School, and the next day started working for the B & O Railroad. Herb stayed with the railroad for 44 years, until his retirement as chief dispatcher in 1985.
He was Methodist by faith. Herb was a member of Aerie 245, F.O.E., Cumberland, where he served as president. He proudly held the title of Past Worthy President, as he occasionally liked to be called by his kids at home.
When his children were young, Herb was the Dad who did everything with his kids and all the kids in the neighborhood. He loved to play softball, fish, swim, and fly kites—anything the kids wanted to do. Later in life, Herb enjoyed duckpin bowling with friends and he loved to walk. He loved all animals, but had a special fondness for dogs—especially Snoopy and Hector. He loved his family. He was kind and patient and never too busy to spend time with his children and grandchildren—and Pap Pap, was he was affectionately known, enjoyed every minute he spent with them!
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Eileen (Winebrenner) Dawson; his son, Herbert Francis Dawson Jr.; his sister, Alice Resh; and his two brothers, Arnold Dawson, and wife Clara, and Russell Dawson, and wife Marie.
Survivors include his two daughters, Sandi Hnilica and husband George, and Dee Owens and husband Harry; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Dawson; grandchildren, Dena Couturier, and her children, Harmoni and Noah, Dillard Irvin and girlfriend Kathy, and children Amber and Ashley; Dustin Hnilica and wife Jennifer; Krista Friend and husband Jimmy, and children Curtis and girlfriend Tasha, Madison, and boyfriend John, Joe, and Sarah; Amber Beachy and husband Darren, and children Micah and Jonathon; and Herbert W. Dawson. On Dec. 20, 2011, Herb’s first great-great-grandchild, Dawson James Matrey, was born to Curtis and girlfriend Tasha.
At his request, Herb’s body will be cremated. There will be no memorial service.
Pap will be deeply missed by many, but we know Mom and Herby were waiting for him and he is taking long walks again, with Snoopy and Hector by his side. We will miss you and always love you deeply Herb . . . Dad . . . Pap.
The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
Condolences to the family may be posted after his obituary at www.upchurchfh.com.
