FROSTBURG — Sharon N. (Sweitzer) Ashby, 67, of Frostburg, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., as a result of complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Born May 11, 1945, in Shaft, she was the daughter of the late Clifton E. and Isabel H. (Evans) Sweitzer. Mrs. Ashby spent her professional life as a third-grade teacher at Oldtown, St. Michael’s, and Route 40 Elementary Schools. She also tutored many students in her spare time, often free of charge. She also volunteered her time raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project and was active as a member of the congregation of Shaft United Methodist Church as pianist and newsletter editor. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and the highlight of her week was spending Fridays with them.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Robert Ashby Sr., of Frostburg; sons, Robert Ashby Jr., of Cockeysville and Mark Ashby and wife Jennifer, of Rawlings; two grandsons, Nathan and Trevor Ashby, of Rawlings; sisters, Donna Winner and husband John, of Baltimore and Gen. (Ret.) Melissa Rank and husband Gary, of Swanton; sister-in-law, Sharon Davis and husband Dennis, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; as well as five nieces and nephews and their spouses, children, and grandchildren.
As per her written request, Mrs. Ashby donated her remains to medical research in the hopes that a cure will someday be found for ALS. Following this, her ashes will be spread at a private location.
A small, private memorial ceremony will be held for immediate family.
A public celebration of her life will be held at Shaft Fire Hall, Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the ALS Association at www.alsa.org or (888)-949-2577.
Durst Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.durstfuneralhome.com.
