OLDTOWN — James William Gross, 68, of Oldtown, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 at his brother and sister-in-law’s home in Paw Paw, W.Va., fighting his battles with cancer.
Born Oct. 1, 1944 in Paw Paw, he was the son of the late Earl and Reda (Hudson) Gross. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Gross, California; and three granddaughters, Nicole Reann Gross, Hancock, Mary Ann Gross, Hancock, and Mary Ellen Arnold, Springfield, W.Va.
James enjoyed spending time with his family. Never meeting a stranger, he helped anyone who needed help. He was always busy tinkering with something. He liked to hunt, fish and teach baseball to his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Gross, Cumberland; one daughter, Diane May Mease and husband Rodney, Paw Paw; two sons, Robert William Gross,Texas and Donald Cleveland Gross and wife Sherry, Hyndman, Pa.; one brother, Carson Gross and wife Linda, Paw Paw; seven grandchildren, Michalla Martin, Skyler Martin, Taylor Gross, Makenzie Mease, Logan Gross, Rylan Mease and Mason Gross; four nieces, Karen Hott and husband Phil, Paw Paw, Mary Ott and fiancé Kevin Price, PawPaw, Vickie Peltack, California, and Nancy Brown, Augusta, W.Va.; five nephews, Carson Gross Jr. and fiancée Sherry, Paw Paw, Ronnie Brown and wife Beth, Capon Bridge, W.Va., Kenny Day and wife Tonya, Paw Paw, James R. Gross and wife Christina, Vermont, and Brian Gross, Califoria; 10 great-nieces, Jill Whitacre and husband Jason, Capon Bridge, Traci Brown, Everett, Pa., Kim Brown, Everett, Jamie Watkins, Sierra Hott, Lauren Hott, Jordan Price, Laken Day, Mckenna Barger, and Janae Hott, all of PawPaw; one great-great-niece, Lilah Watkins, Paw Paw; four great-nephews, Andy Day, Kegan Day and Carter Gross all of Paw Paw, and Andrew Brown, Everett; special friends, Dave Garlitz, Oldtown, Susan and Bill Ruble, Pin Oaks, W.Va. and their three children who called him “Pap”, Joseph, Jennifer and Janeen; and his “adopted” son and special buddy, Jason Heitt, Paw Paw.
The family would like to especially thank Aunt Linda and Uncle Carson for giving of their time and their home to care for Daddy. And to Hospice of the Panhandle of West Virginia, we say “Thank you”.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Pastor Joe DiNicola officiating.
Pallbearers are Carson Gross Jr., Kenny Day, Jason Hiett, and Bill Ruble, Frank Cardran Jr. and Wade Cutter.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
