ECKHART — William "Bill" R. Ryan, 79, of Eckhart, passed away at home on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.
Born in Eckhart Mines on Aug. 21, 1933, along with six brother and sisters, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret Ryan.
William was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War serving as a Corporal at Fort Benning, Ga. He owned and operated with his wife the Ryan's Gulf gas station/market in Eckhart. Retiring from ABL with 29 years of service in 1984, he spent most of his retirement with his grandchildren. William was a member of the Cresaptown Eagles, Frostburg American Legion, Piney Mountain Sportsman Club, Barrelville Outdoor Club, and many other organizations. Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing and sharing stories with friends .
William is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou (Rase) Ryan; son, Steven and wife, Julie of Eckhart; grandson, Zachary and wife Tiffany Ryan; great-granddaughter, Fiona; great-grandson, Gavin Ryan of Eckhart; brothers, Charles Ryan and wife, Sandy, Richard Ryan and wife, Kay; sisters, Mildred Knepp, Phyllis Pape and Gin Sween and husband Gary all reside in Eckhart. Bill leaves behind many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. William also leaves behind his long time friend, Terry Goldsworthy who has given many prayers and visits throughout the years. Extended thanks to Roberta Shaffer for all her good deeds and support for William and his family.
Friends and family will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.
Interment will be in Eckhart Cemetery.
American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the graveside.
Pallbearers will be Terry Goldsworthy, Billie Joe Diehl, Gary Sween, Randy Rase, Raymond Rase, and Joey Walsh.
In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the Frostburg Ambulance or the Eckhart United Methodist Church.
