ROBERT E. FRISBY [Eckhart]

ECKHART — Robert Edward Frisby, 87, of Eckhart Mines, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.

Born Aug. 31, 1925, in Cumberland, Robert was the son of the late Sterling Sr., and Elizabeth Ester (Davis) Frisby. He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 69 years, Alice, whom he married in 1944 while he was in the U.S. Navy; a daughter, Charlene R. Frisby; sisters, Dorothy Elizabeth (Frisby) Squarrel and Eileen Vilma (Frisby) Downz; and brothers, Charles Franklin Frisby and Sterling Frisby Jr.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Michele R. Frisby, New Carrollton; his brother-in-law, Earl Green and sister-in-law Johnnie Mae of Deltona, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Robert attended Frederick Street High School (later called Carver High) in Cumberland. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy 24th Construction Battalion (Seabees) and one of more than one million African-Americans who served in the United States military during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater (Philippines and Papua, New Guinea). He served from November 1943 until February 1946.

In October 1946, Robert joined the Kelly Springfield Tire and Rubber Company. He retired in March 1984 as a shift foreman.

Robert was a role model to many. Despite the racial inequality that was pervasive throughout the U.S. during much of his lifetime, he conducted his life with a dignity, strength, and pride that earned him the respect of nearly everyone with whom he came in contact. Throughout his life, he was a devoted and loving husband and father to his family and a mentor to many others. He and his recently deceased wife Alice will be sorely missed.

Robert will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date followed by inurnment in Frostburg Memorial Park.

The family thanks the many members of the WMHS Hospice Services for their unfailing support over the past few months and for the kindness they showed Robert while he was under their care.

Memorial contributions in Robert’s memory may be made to the Dickerson AME Church, 146 W. Mechanic St., Frostburg, MD 21532.

Online condolences may be sent to www.sowersfuneralhome.com.
