Karen L. Friend [Oakland]

OAKLAND — Karen L. Friend, 65, of Oakland, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at home, surrounded by her family.  

She was born Dec. 11, 1946, in Accident, the daughter of the late Earl and Theresa (Wotring) Deal. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother whom helped raise her, “Giggy” Ruth Eichelberger; a granddaughter, Lana Howdy-shell; a brother, Ervin Deal; and a sister, Beverly Ruth Dewitt.

Karen was a hairdresser in Oakland for over 35 years. She was a prior member of the American Legion and Red Hat Society.  

She is survived by her husband, Joseph L. Friend, of Oakland; two daughters, Terri Jo Friend, of Oakland and Alanna Cannon and husband Steve, of Kentucky; six grandchildren, Blake Fazenbaker, Santanna Howdyshell, Wyatt Dove, Joel Dove, Jaiden Cannon and Maddi Cannon; four sisters, Connie Wilson, of Oakland, Marlene Glass, of Jarrettsville, Eilene Beckman, of Georgia, and Janice Georg, of Accident; special sister-in-law, Erma Dewitt; special nieces, Lori Hatcher, Lacy House, and Lisa Schlosnagle; and special friends, Carolyn Lower, Vickie Berry, and Tracey Slagle.

Friends were received on Monday, Jan. 23, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N. 2nd St., Oakland.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broken Spoke Stables, in memory of Lana Howdyshell, 3783 Pleasant Valley Road, Oakland, MD 21550.
