FLINTSTONE — Mearl E. Bennett, 73, of Flintstone, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 at his home.
Born Dec. 20, 1938, in Flintstone, he was the son of Grethel (Turner) Bennett and the late Howard Bennett. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Freeda Riggleman, Charlotte Bennett and Kathaleen Gerley and one brother, Roy Bennett.
Mr. Bennett worked as a mechanic, most recently at Stroehman’s Bakery. He was Methodist by faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird watching. In fact, more than thirty birds arrived to sing to him as he was leaving his home for the last time.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Janet; his mother Grethel (who is 100 years old); three daughters, Brenda K. Whetzel and husband Scott, of Keyser, W.Va., Janice Hockman and husband David, of Cumberland and Tammy Bennett, of Cumberland; five grandchildren, Scott Hockman, of Cumberland, Tina Raines and husband William, of Oldtown, Nikol Bennett, of Cumberland and Amanda and Ashley Whetzel, of Keyser; six great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Scotty, Trenton, Skylar, Gauge and Dylan; a sister, Rosalie Mullenax, of Flintstone; six brothers, Carl Bennett, of Cumberland, Leroy Bennett, of Cumberland, Howard Bennett Jr. and special friend Anna Lee, of Pennsylvania, Paul Bennett and wife Sandy, of Cumberland, Lance Bennett and wife Elaine, of Pennsylvania, and Larry Bennett and wife Peggy, of Cumberland; a sister-in-law, Arline Mencer, of Cumberland; and special friends Sonny and Cheri Bennett who were a tremendous help.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland (www. scarpellifh.com) on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Richard Ketterman officiating.
Interment will be at Glendale Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank all of the hospice care staff for their presence and great care.
