COLUMBIA — Bernard “Barney” “Bernie” Joseph Borgman, 89, of Columbia, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Howard County General Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1922, in Cumberland, Mr. Borgman was the son of the late Walter John Borgman and Vera Virginia Borgman. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Evelyn Borgman, Oct. 16, 2012; and a brother, Aloysius “Wishey” Borgman.
A United States Naval veteran of World War II and the Korean Era having served as a Salvage Diver on the USS Kiowa, Barney retired from the Chessie System, the Foreman of the Car Division of Chessie after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Resurrection of Saint Paul Church, Elliott City. Barney was a member of the Chesapeake Commodore’s Club and the Miles River Yacht Club where he served as Commodore of both organizations. Barney was also a member of the Kent Island Yacht Club; the Retired Administrators of the B&O; Cheers; the V.F.W. in Easton; and the Elks also in Easton. In 1994, Barney received the Commendation of Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay under Governor William D. Schaffer.
Barney is survived by his daughters, Diane B. Iskra and husband, Chuck, Columbia and Sandra K. Kelly, Jefferson City, Wis. He is also survived by his sister, Irene McElfish, Kennesaw, Ga.: his grandchildren, Lora Win-grove and husband, Glen, Baltimore and Madison Iskra, Columbia; and his great-grandchildren, the twins, Eden and Jandy Wingrove.
Friends will be received at the Slack Funeral Home, 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Friends will also be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at 11 a.m. with Father Bernard Finerty, O.F.M. Cap., officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
