CUMBERLAND — Dan Strietbeck, whose pitching and hitting helped lead Mountain Ridge to its first baseball state championship, was named the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches.

Strietbeck heads a 22-player first-team, chosen by coaches, that includes five players from Mountain Ridge, which shared the league championship with Northern. Both finished 12-4 in league play.

Strietbeck, a left-handed pitcher and right-handed hitter, went 12-2 with one save in a dominating season on the mound that featured a 0.80 earned run average, a no-hitter during the regular season, a one-hitter in the Maryland state semifinal and a two-hitter in the state championship game. In 95 2-3 innings, he allowed only 46 hits and struck out 148, an average of more than 10 per game.

At the plate, he batted .472 with 34 hits in 72 at-bats, including seven doubles, seven home runs and 40 RBIs in only 25 games for the Miners, who won 12 of their final 13 games and finished 18-7 overall.

Pitchers

The All-AMAC first-team pitchers are Bishop Walsh’s Kevin Myers, Hampshire’s Josh Crawford, Southern’s Scott Cooper and Allegany’s Bryce Nightengale.

• Myers was 4-4 with an exceptional 1.10 ERA and 126 strikeouts in only 62 2-3 innings, an average of 14 per game. He allowed only 31 hits and walked just 10. He also was powerful at the plate, batting .545 with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 16 RBIs.

• Crawford, a junior, went 4-0 with a 2.60 ERA. He pitched 35 innings, walked only 13 and struck out 39.

• Cooper, a junior, had a 5-3 record with a 1.78 ERA. In 35 1-3 innings, he allowed 28 hits, with 27 being singles, walked six and fanned 27. He batted .317 with five doubles, two homers and 17 RBIs.

• Nightengale, a sophomore, was 5-3 with a 4.94 ERA and struck out 58 in 51 innings in leading the Campers’ staff.

Catchers

Southern’s Danny Sislo and Mountain Ridge’s Caleb Fazenbaker are the first-team catchers.

• Sislo, a senior, batted .379 with nine doubles, one home run and 21 RBIs.

• Fazenbaker, also a senior, hit .374 with two doubles, two triples and 19 RBIs.

Infielders

Seven infielders were named to the first-team, with Northern and Keyser getting two each. The first-teamers are Patrick Sines and Jerad Fike of Northern, Brent Parrish and Josh Bane of Keyser, Evan Harden of Fort Hill, Cody Malone of Mountain Ridge and Mason Dick of Southern.

• Sines, a senior, batted .422 with a school-record 35 hits, six doubles, one triple, one home run and 20 RBIs. He was also 7-2 with a 3.04 ERA as a pitcher.

• Fike, a junior, hit .403 with six doubles, one triple and 18 RBIs. He also was a pitcher, going 5-1 with two saves and a 1.33 ERA.

• Parrish, a senior, hit .333 with 25 hits, including four doubles and two triples and had 12 RBIs.

• Bane, a sophomore, batted .338 with 27 hits, including five doubles, a home run and 12 RBIs. He stole 10 bases.

• Harden, a senior, hit .426 with seven doubles, two triples and 11 RBIs.

• Malone, a senior, batted .352 and had eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 20 RBIs, including the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning in Mountain Ridge’s 2-1 win over St. Michael’s in the state championship game.

• Dick, a senior, hit .413 with five doubles and six RBIs.

Outfielders

The first-team outfield consists of Matt Propst of Fort Hill, Jamison Jones of Keyser, Derek Noble of Southern, Chris Fram of Allegany and Jacob Kyle of Mountain Ridge.

• Propst, a senior, hit .426 with two doubles, two triples, a home run and 12 RBIs.

• Jones, a senior, batted .430 with 34 hits, including four doubles, a triple and two home runs. He had 12 RBIs, and also had two wins and a 2.09 ERA as a pitcher.

• Noble, also a senior, batted .410, getting 32 hits in 78 at-bats. He had seven doubles, two triples, one home run and 11 RBIs.

• Fram, a junior, hit .365 with six doubles, a home run and 14 RBIs.

• Kyle, also a junior, batted .358 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and 14 RBIs.

Designated hitter

Two designated hitters were chosen to the first-team: Northern’s Cody Rodeheaver and Mountain Ridge’s Josh Mills.

• Rodeheaver hit .453 with four doubles, one home run and 22 RBIs, and also was 5-2 with a save and 3.01 ERA as a pitcher.

• Mills hit .347 with three doubles, a triple, two home runs and 17 RBIs.

Utility players

Two multi-position players were chosen as first-team utility players. They were Frankfort’s Cole Smith and Fort Hill’s Zac Steckman.

• Smith batted .428 with 36 hits, including three doubles and a triple. He scored 32 runs and had 32 stolen bases.

• Steckman hit .418 with 23 hits in 55 at-bats, including five doubles and a triple. He had seven stolen bases.
