Lytle, ACM win opener, 7-3

February 28, 2010 — KINSTON, N.C. — Andy Lytle struck out 13 batters and worked his way out a few self-inflicted jams to introduce Allegany College of Maryland to the 2010 season with a complete-game victory over host Lenoir Saturday afternoon.

Going along with Lytle’s 13 strikeouts were six hits allowed, though most of the trouble Lytle saw came from his nine walks.

“I’m really happy with the way we pitched to start the season,” said Allegany head coach Steve Bazarnic. “He got himself into some jams, but got himself out of most of them.”

Ahead 7-1 going into the bottom of the ninth, Lytle allowed a walk and two hits that scored two runs. The Lancers managed two runs to make it 7-3, and had runners on first and third before Lytle forced an easy liner to second for a double play.

Ethan Newton hit a triple, a double and drove in a run, and Kyle Sanders drove in two runs with a double and a single. John Kemmer knocked in one run with a double and a single, and Kasey Clinton hit a solo home run and added a second RBI.

Jay Thompson had half of Lenoir’s six hits with a double and two singles.

The teams will play again today at 1 o’clock in a single game.

Potomac State    1    6

Brunswick    4    1

SUPPLY, N.C. — Former Allegany High star Cody Ellsworth hurled six masterful innings in his first collegiate start to lead Potomac State to a split of their doubleheader at Brunswick Community College.

Ellsworth scattered four hits — two being infield singles — and struck out two in getting the Catamounts’ first victory of the year.

Backed by an errorless defense that turned a pair of double plays, Ellsworth threw only 56 pitches in his six innings of work.

Jake Ringold and Kurtis Voytell doubled and singled to lead the Potomac State offense.

Dave McNeill’s 2-run single in the first inning gave the Catamounts (1-4) the early lead. Ringold had an RBI single in the fourth that made it 3-0, and an RBI double by Ringold and an RBI single by Voytell in the sixth made it 6-0.

Brunswick (3-5) scored in the bottom of the sixth with two singles and a sacrifice fly.

Brunswick won the opener behind a complete-game five-hitter by Brock Holmes.

The Dolphins scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, and a 2-run double by Dan Fisher made it 4-0 in the fourth.

Jason Driver drove in Potomac State’s run with a single in the seventh inning.

The teams complete a 3-game weekend series today at noon.
