SALEM, Va. — Roanoke snapped a 1-1 tie with three consecutive goals during a 23-minute span and defeated Frostburg State, 4-2, in the college women’s field hockey season opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Roanoke scored first, just two minutes into the match, but Frostburg State’s Lindsey Frost answered, tying it just 11 minutes later. The Maroons then jumped ahead 4-1 on the strength of the three straight goals. The first came late in the first half, and the other two came in the first 12 minutes of the second.
Breanne Russell scored the final goal, for the Bobcats, in the 49th minute.
Frostburg State outshot Roanoke 11-5 in the second half and finished with a match-high 19 shots. The Bobcats also held a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Roanoke goalkeeper Christina Schicilone had seven second-half saves in keeping the Bobcats at bay. Schicilone finished with 12 saves and FSU’s Maggie Edwards had four.
The Bobcats make their home debut on Saturday, at 11 a.m., against DeSales (Pa.) College.
