Spartans spear Trojans, 8-1

Hamphire girls return favor

— CUMBERLAND — Onofrio Castiglia had three goals and assisted on two others, and Matt Kelley also had a hat trick as Bishop Walsh rolled past visiting Hampshire, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon in high school boys soccer.

The win keeps Bishop Walsh unbeaten at 3-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference. Hampshire fell to 0-6 and 0-1.

The Trojans led until late in the first half. Jonathan Hotchkiss got the goal, Hampshire’s first of the season, unassisted, with 20:14 left in the half.

Castiglia tied it with an unassisted goal less than six minutes later, and Kelley put BW on top for good by scoring on a Castiglia assist with 11:28 left in the half.

The Spartans, who scored seven second-half goals in a 9-1 win over Pendleton earlier this week, scored six in the second half against Hampshire.

Isaac Strauss started the big second half by scoring on a feed from Castiglia just 1:41 into the half. Kelley made it 5-1 with back-to-back goals, with Welch and Strauss getting assists.

Castiglia scored twice in just an 11-second span to make it 7-1. The first was on an assist from John Thompson with 18:24 to go and the second was unassisted at 18:11.

Thompson concluded the scoring on a pass from Josh Squires with just under eight minutes left.

BW led in shots 37-6 and in corner kicks 3-0. Brandon Kimble had two saves and Lucas Bruck 1 in goal for the Spartans. Josh Vickery had nine stops and Isaak Lambert two for the Trojans.

Hampshire plays at Fort Hill at noon on Saturday. Bishop Walsh will play in the third annual Mountain Ridge Shootout, also on Saturday. The Spartans play Class AAA Frederick at 3:30, and take on defending area champion Mountain Ridge at 7:30.

CUMBERLAND — Lindsay Long scored three goals and Sarah Kidner had two goals and two assists to power Hampshire to an 8-2 win at Bishop Walsh in high school girls soccer Wednesday evening.

The win was the first of the year for the Trojans (1-5 overall, 1-0 AMAC), who led 3-0 at halftime.

Long scored twice in the first half, getting assists from Kidner and Harwood. Kidner had the other goal, unassisted.

Seven goals were scored in the second half, with Rebecca Strawn, Kidner, Jayden Ware, Long and Harwood scoring for Hampshire. Kidner and Brittany Maphis had second-half assists.

BW’s Katlyn Fuzie got the Spartans on the board by scoring on a feed from Marion Irvin in the 74th minute. Fuzie scored again, five minutes later, to complete the scoring.

Hampshire led in shots 23-10 and in corner kicks 4-2. Rachel McBride had five saves and Shelby Kaiser had two in goal for the Trojans. Maggie McGill had eight saves and Rebecca Winner two for the Spartans.

On Saturday, BW (1-2-1, 0-2-1 AMAC) will play Altoona at 1:30 and Mountain Ridge at 5:30 in the Mountain Ridge Shootout. Hampshire wil host Mountain Ridge on Tuesday.
