BETHANY, W.Va. — Justin Wilkinson scored the only goal of the day, in the 89th minute, as Bethany spoiled the season debut of Frostburg State in men’s soccer Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams had plenty of chances to score before the 89th minute as the two teams combined for 26 shots. Bethany finished with 14, including 10 in the second half. The Bobcats had 12 and held a 7-4 edge in the opening period.
Wilkinson checked into the game at 80:47 and less than eight minutes later scored on the game’s final shot off a free kick at 88:09.
FSU goalkeeper Stephen Cavallo made four saves.
Frostburg State hosts the FSU Tournament this weekend at Bobcat Stadium. The Bobcats host Wilmington on Friday in the second game of the opening round at 7:30 pm.
Women
FROSTBURG — Amanda Wharton and Taylor Jenkins scored second-half goals as Frostburg State blanked Eastern Mennonite (Va.), 2-0, in the college women’s soccer opener for both teams Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Wharton, a sophomore, scored in the 73rd minute off a stellar pass from former Northern Garrett star Adria Graham. Jenkins, a senior, provided an insurance goal, scoring in the 89th minute.
Frostburg State outshot Eastern Mennonite 19-1 over the first 45 minutes. The Bobcats finished the night with lopsided advantages in shots, 32-2, and corner kicks, 10-1. Goalkeeper Michelle Buckmaster had one save while Eastern Mennonite’s Abby Diffenbach had 10.
Frostburg State will play Catholic on Saturday, at 4 p.m., at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown.
