Former NFL player hosting skills camp

FROSTBURG — Former NFL wide receiver and Frostburg State University assistant football coach Javin Hunter will be hosting a one-day football skills camp on Saturday, July 9.

The camp is free to all kids between the ages of six and 12 and will be held at Bobcat Stadium on the Frostburg State campus. Orioles beat Cardinals for Bi-State title

WILEY FORD, W.Va. — Michael White and Alec Taylor turned a double play to record the final two outs of the Wiley Ford Orioles’ 10-5 win over the Short Gap Cardinals to win the Minor Division playoffs of the Bi-State Little League.

Devyn Gillespie had three singles, White hit two triples and Chase Cosner had a triple and a single in the win. Hunter Dennison added a double.

Brady Whitacre and Lauren Whiteman had three singles each.

Pee Wee Reds holding football sign-ups

CUMBERLAND — The South Cumberland Reds pee wee football team will be holding registration on Saturday, 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the Eugene Mason Sports Complex.

The registration fee is $50 for players and cheerleaders and is due at the time of registration.

Fundraisers will also be handed out at this time.

Keyser CAYFL sign-ups on Saturday

KEYSER, W.Va. — The Keyser Steelers of the C.A.Y.F.L will hold registration on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Redinger pitches during Maryland victory

NORMAN, Okla. — Ryan Redinger threw the first four innings of Team Maryland’s 12-4 win over Team Canada Wednesday afternoon at the Heartland Classic in Norman, Okla.

Redinger allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits while striking four and walking two. Brandon Hayward from James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury hit a home run and had five RBIs in the win.

Earlier in the day, Maryland blew a 5-0 lead, and allowed seven unearned runs during the fifth inning of a 15-7 loss to Arkansas.

Now 2-2 in the tournament, Maryland will play undefeated Texas today beginning at 1 p.m. The game can be watched live free of charge on www.zreps.com.

Friend takes first-round lead at W.Va. Open

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Morgantown pro Bob Friend has a two-stroke lead after the opening day of the West Virginia Open.

Friend shot a 5-under-par 66 Wednesday at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown.

Amateur Tad Tomblin of Alum Creek is in second place with a 3-under 68. Two-time defending champion David Bradshaw shot 69.

Friend has finished in the top 10 of the Open for six straight years, including two top three finishes. He’s director of golf operations at Pikewood National Golf Club, not far from The Pines.

Garland Green of Tazewell, Va., was fourth at 70. Tied at even-par 71 were Wheeling’s Bryan Myers, Martinsburg’s Trevor Hedges, Washington’s J.R. Jones, Mason’s Trent Roush and Keyser’s Bradley Yutzy.

Past champions Jonathan Clark and John Ross each shot 72.

Ravens move training camp due to lockout

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens will move their 2011 training camp to their facility in Owings Mills from McDaniel College in Westminster.

McDaniel had been the Ravens’ training camp since the franchise began in 1996. Last year, more than 110,000 fans attended open practice sessions at McDaniel. Fans are not allowed to attend practice at the Owings Mills facility.

Ravens’ vice president of operations Bob Eller said Wednesday that uncertainty over the NFL lockout forced the team to make the move.

College football growing by 25 more teams

DALLAS (AP) — College football is growing, with eight schools starting programs this fall.

The National Football Foundation released the details Wednesday, noting that a total of 25 programs will start up over the next four years.

Texas-San Antonio will be the largest program to begin play this year, starting up at the Championship Subdivision level under former Miami coach Larry Coker. Presentation College and Stevenson University will play in NCAA Division III, four schools will start NAIA programs and Virginia University of Lynchburg will play as an independent.

Six schools are set to add programs in 2012, with eight more the following year and three in 2014.

Stetson and Mercer will be the biggest of the programs to launch in the next three years, both as non-scholarship programs in the FCS in 2013.

Vanderbilt ousts Carolina from CWS

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Taylor Hill and Corey Williams combined on four-hitter, Connor Harrell and Curt Casali homered and Vanderbilt eliminated North Carolina from the College World Series with a 5-1 victory Wednesday night.

Vanderbilt (54-11) beat the Tar Heels for the second time in the CWS and plays Southeastern Conference rival Florida on Friday. The Commodores are in Omaha for the first time and would need to beat the Gators twice to reach next week’s best-of-three finals.

North Carolina (51-16) left 34 runners on base in its three CWS games and was just 7 for 39 with runners in scoring position.

Hill (6-1) allowed a run and four hits in seven innings. Greg Holt (7-2) took the loss.

Harrell’s three-run homer put Vanderbilt up 4-0 in the second inning.
