Frostburg City Bowling League meets

FROSTBURG — The Frostburg City Bowling League will meet Wednesday, July 14, 7 p.m., at Sherwood Lanes. All team captains should attend. Plans for the upcoming season will be discussed.

 

Mtn. Ridge basketball sets golf tourney

FROSTBURG — The Mountain Ridge High School boys basketball program will sponsor a golf tournament Friday, July 16 at Maplehurst Country Club. Registration is at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

The cost is $50 per player with pick-your-own-foursomes. The fee includes green fees, food, cart, food and refreshments on the course, and awards and food after play.

Farris football/cheer sign-up Monday

CUMBERLAND — There will be a registration for the James W. Farris Football and Cheerleading Camp on Monday at the Bishop Walsh School main entrance from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

The camps are open to any boy or girl between the ages of six through high school senior. Anybody who has already sent a form need not register. Registering by July 12 provides for an early-registration discount. The camp will be instructed by West Virginia University coaches, Frostburg State coaches and area coaches, including Wes Ours.

The cheerleader camp will be instructed by the FSU cheerleader coach and senior cheerleaders. The same format used last year will be used again this year, including T-shirts and lunches. CAYFL approves CCA students to play

CUMBERLAND — Effective this year any boy or girl student in grades 6-8 at Calvary Christian Academy can play or cheer football for the Bishop Walsh Middle School football team in the Cumberland Area Youth Football League. Any interested person must register by this weekend by calling Ray DiGilarmo at 301-759-4028 (home) or 301-707-0983 (cell). This is for the fall sports season and will not reflect any other sport season. Call DiGilarmo with any questions.

 

Frankfort boosters meeting Tuesday

SHORT GAP, W.Va. — The Frankfort High School Athletic Boosters will meet Tuesday, 7 p.m., in the commons area of the high school.

All coaches, parents, and supporters of Frankfort athletics are encouraged to attend.

 

Allegany youth football camp July 21-23

CUMBERLAND — The 10th annual Allegany Campers Youth Football Camp will be held July 21-22, 6 to 8 p.m., and July 23, 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Allegany High School.

The camp will be presented by Allegany High football players and coaching staff with a special guest Kevin Page of the 2010 ECFA champion Frederick Outlaws. Page is a 2005 Fort Hill High graduate and the 2004 Times-News Player of the Year.

Page continued his career at Glenville (W.Va.) State college and played for Pittsburgh in the Arena Football League before joining the Outlaws. He recently signed with a minor league team in Chambersburg, Pa.

The football camp is open to all area youths who will be in grades K-8 this fall.

The camp offers beginners an introduction to the basic fundamentals of football, and offers the experienced player an opportunity to develop and improve skills. There will be competitions and prizes nightly following the instructional stations. All Pee Wee and CAYFL players are encouraged to attend, as well as any child wanting to “try the game” for possible participation in organized teams. No previous football experience is needed, and there is no weight or size limit.

Registration will be held Wednesday, July 14, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.,in front of the gymnasium at Allegany High School. The cost is $30 ($25 for siblings) and includes a camp shirt. For more information, call Jeannette DeStefano at 301-729-1241 or e-mail at sportmagnetmom@gmail.com.

 

JCP Soccer holds final registrations

CUMBERLAND — The JCP Soccer League will hold final league-wide sign-ups on Tuesday, July 13, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Frostburg State University Cumberland Hall Lobby and on Thursday, July 15, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Allegany College of Maryland Continuing Education Building,room 6.

For all JCP teams, the Varsity Division consists of boys and girls ages 11-14 as of Sept. 1 of the year in grades 6-8. The JV Division consists of boys and girls ages 8-10 as of Sept. 1 of the year in grades 3-5. The B Division consists of players ages 5-7 as of Sept. 1 of the year in grades K-2. All children entering kindergarten are eligible to play. All players need to bring a photocopy of their birth certificate to registration. All youth from all areas in all JCP age groups are eligible to come to the sign-up times as these will be the final league sign-ups, which will be conducted by league officials.

 

Orioles recall pitcher Chris Tillman

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have recalled right-hander Chris Tillman from Triple-A Norfolk to start against the Texas Rangers.

Tillman takes the mound Saturday night opposite Cliff Lee, who makes his Rangers debut a day after being acquired from Seattle in a six-player trade.

Baltimore optioned infielder Josh Bell to Norfolk.

Missing from Baltimore’s starting lineup were catcher Matt Wieters (right hamstring strain) and left fielder Felix Pie (left quadriceps strain). Both came out of Friday night’s game after getting injured when they slipped running on the rain-slicked field.

The Orioles don’t expect Wieters or Pie to play again until after the All-Star break.

 

Fowles leads USA over WNBA

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Sylvia Fowles scored 13 of her 23 points in the third quarter and the U.S. national team beat the WNBA All-Stars 99-72 on Saturday in this year’s version of the league’s midseason showcase.

Candice Dupree and Swin Cash had 13 points apiece, UConn senior Maya Moore added 12 and Angel McCoughtry 11 for the U.S. Fowles shot 9 for 11 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds, earning the game’s MVP award.

Katie Douglas had 15 points, Penny Taylor scored 12 and Sophia Young added 10 for the All-Stars.

Fowles was dominant over the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half, shooting 5 for 6 from the field, 3 for 4 from the free-throw line and grabbing five rebounds. The Chicago Sky center converted a layup with 3:38 to go in the third to make it 68-37, the U.S.’s biggest of the game.

The All-Stars tried to make a run in the fourth quarter. Young scored six points, Taylor had five and Lindsay Whalen four as the WNBA used a 17-6 run to pull to 81-61 with 6:12 remaining. But that was as close as it got.
