ACM routs Southern Maryland

CUMBERLAND — Taylor Siggers put up a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Allegany College of Maryland played about as clean a defensive strategy as possible in slapping Southern Maryland with a 77-37 loss Tuesday at Bob Kirk Arena in the first round of the Maryland JUCO Conference Tournament.

Also coming through with a double-double was Monique Rhodes, who matched Siggers in rebounding while scoring 15 points. Madi Nightengale finished with 14 points and Ashlei Sutton added nine points and six assists. Brittany Taylor chipped in with eight points.

Defensively, the Trojans allowed 23 points in the first half before allowing almost half that during the second. Allegany committed only four team fouls, and Southern Maryland attempted no free throws. Allegany, on the other hand, took full advantage of their trips to the foul line, making 17 out of 23.

The win moves the Trojans (18-7) into the second round of the tournament. They will face Prince George’s on Thursday, 1 p.m., at Frederick Community College.

Prince George’s    72

Garrett    53

UPPER MARLBORO — Garrett couldn’t shake a frigid start on offense, and though it played evenly with Prince George’s for the final 30 minutes, the Lakers fell to the Owls Tuesday in the first round of the Maryland JUCO Tournament.

The Lakers found themselves on the wrong end of an 18-0 hole before getting on the board. Despite that, Garrett fought back to score 19 points and trail by 14 at halftime and eventually lost by a difference of 19 points.

Lindsey Miller scored 13 points and Southern graduate Mariah Stem added 12 for Garrett.

The Lakers finish the regular season by playing Potomac State in McHenry on Monday, Feb. 28.
