KEYSER, W.Va. — Fort Hill rushed for 248 yards with a 46-yard second-quarter touchdown run by Garrett Clay, a 17-yard third-quarter TD run by Shawn Metheny and a stingy performance by the defense helping the Sentinels shut out Keyser, 24-0, Saturday at Alumni Field at Tornado Alley.
Clay was the leading ballcarrier of the game with 88 yards on nine carries, while Metheny picked up 75 yards on 13 carries — 47 coming on five second-half carries. What made all else academic, however, was the Fort Hill defense, which stuff the Keyser running game to 96 yards on 33 carries and 112 yards total offense.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Golden Tornado pinned Fort Hill back on the its own 9, and then a penalty put it at the 4, before Metheny brought it out five yards on first down and Garrett Clay picked up 20 more on second.
Two plays later, Keyser was hit with a pass interference call, giving the Sentinels the ball at their 38. Two plays after quarterback Joe Howser picked up a first down at the 49, he found Dylan Clay for 29 yards, giving the Sentinels a first down at the Keyser 18.
Metheny cut back and broke a tackle for 14 yards on first down and two plays later Garrett Dolly went across from two yards out for the touchdown, capping off a 13-play, 91-yard scoring drive that ate 6:15 of clock. Phil Giugliano’s kick made it 7-0.
Keyser fumbled the ball from its 17 on its next possession, but J.R. Flint got the ball right back for the Golden Tornado with an interception, returning it to the Keyser 35. Field position had been established for the Sentinels, though, and when Keyser punted the ball back Fort Hill had the ball on the Tornado 48 yard-line.
Two plays later, Garrett Clay was sprung on a trap and went right up the middle for 46 yards and the touchdown at 3:20 of the second quarter, with Giugliano’s kick putting the eventual halftime score at 14-0.
To open the second half, Keyser started at its 15 and, with the help of an intentional grounding penalty, would punt from its 7, with Fort Hill taking over at the Keyser 44.
The Sentinels used just seven plays, with Dolly and Metheny picking up first downs and Metheny sweeping to his right for 17 yards and the touchdown at 6:43 of the third, with Giugliano’s kick completing the drive of 4:03.
After a pair of Keyser first downs, Fort Hill got the ball back at its 43 and needed six plays to set up a 35-yard fourth-quarter field goal by Giugliano to put the eventual final at 24-0.
Fort Hill (2-0) will host Mount St. Joseph Friday at Greenway Avenue Stadium, while Keyser (0-2) hosts Northern.
