Southern stops BW

Rams pull away in 4th, win 59-48

 

CUMBERLAND — Top-ranked Southern had three players score in double figures and held Bishop Walsh at bay as the Rams defeated the fourth-ranked Spartans 59-48 Tuesday night at Bishop Walsh School.
D.J. Ritchie led the Rams with 18 points, Wyatt McBee hit for 17 and Kurt Gangler scored 10 as Southern won its sixth straight. Ritchie made six baskets, including two three-pointers, and sank 4 of 5 free throws for his team-leading total. McBee made five three-pointers and was 2-for-2 from the line while Gangler made two threes and two twos.
Bishop Walsh was led by Pat Jones’ game-high 25 points. He made 10 baskets, including three from beyond the three-point line, and he only missed one of three free throw attempts. He was the only Spartan to score in double figures.
Lucas Brock added eight points and Greg Hendershot had seven as well as leading the team with seven rebounds.
Southern never trailed at the breaks, but didn’t put the game out of reach until outscoring Bishop Walsh 17-9 in the fourth quarter. The Rams led 11-10 and 29-23 in the first half, and was up three, 42-39, going into the final eight minutes.
Bishop Walsh won the junior varsity game, 39-35. Garrett Shaffer scored nine points and Brandon Reed added eight. Mayles led the Rams with 10.
Southern (16-5 overall, 12-4 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference) visits Hampshire tonight and Bishop Walsh (15-8, 10-5, 1-3 City) hosts Keyser Thursday.
Fort Hill 60
University 58
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Will Harris hit one-of-two free throws before coming up with a steal to seal the win for Fort Hill over University Tuesday evening in Morgantown, W.Va.
Harris scored only one point, but it was the final one for the Sentinels. On University’s next possession, Harris intercepted a pass that locked up second-ranked Fort Hill’s 16th victory of the season.
Jarrett Wolfe scored 18 points to lead the Sentinels, and Mark Kelly finished with 11 rebounds and eight points. Kammari Powell also finished with eight points while Travis Bush added nine.
For University, Ken Dixon scored 15 points and Michael Walden 10.
Fort Hill (16-5) will finish the regular season tonight when it hosts Frankfort in a tripleheader.
Dalton Gaus scored 11 points during University’s 89-41 jayvee win.
Hampshire 77
Keyser 57
ROMNEY, W.Va. — Robbie Smelser and Tyler Hott both registered career-high scoring totals on Senior Night as Hampshire downed Keyser in Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Smelser shot 15-for-19 from the field and made four of his five free throws to score 34 points. He also had a team-high 13 rebounds and five blocks. Hott also had a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Holden Shockey gave the Trojans eight points.
Keyser got 13 points from Tyler Hoban and 11 more from Jamison Jones. Both Dakota Proud and Danny Fife finished with nine points.
The Trojans won a close jayvee contest 45-40. Levi Moreland scored 13 points, while Austin Clem and Thomas Llewellyn both scored 11 points.
Wesley Nelson scored 14 points for Keyser.
Hampshire (10-11, 7-8 AMAC) plays again tonight when it hosts Southern. Keyser (8-12, 5-10) will play at Bishop Walsh on Thursday.
