PSC coach calling it quits after this season

Golf program’s future to be determined

KEYSER, W.Va. — Potomac State College athletic director Shawn White announced that Aaron Edwards will step down as the golf coach at the conclusion of the spring 2012 season.

“The college extends its sincere appreciation to Aaron for his service to Potomac State as the golf coach for the past seven years,” said White.

Edwards’ successes have included four Region XX Coach of the Year Awards (2008-2011), five Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (WPCC) Coach of the Year Honors (2006–2010) and four PCAA Coach of the Year Awards (2007-2010).

The golf team has won four Region XX Championships (2008-2011), six WPCC Championships (2006–2011) and four PCAA Championships (2007–2010). The team achieved four national championship appearances and has been ranked in the top 15 in the nation for the past eight semesters coming in as high as No. 2 a few times during this streak. Currently, the team is ranked No. 4.

Edwards is stepping down to focus on his full-time responsibilities as the college’s residential education director, a position he has held for the past eight years.

White said the future of the golf program is under assessment and the athletic department will take the next couple of months to conduct an evaluation of the golf program which has faced its share of challenges over the years.

“Not having year-round facilities to meet the team’s needs has become problematic,” said White. “This, in turn, has made it increasingly difficult to recruit student-athletes. And, as is the case with many things these days, expenses continue to rise causing budgetary issues.”
