ACM hosts tournament doubleheader

CUMBERLAND — The Maryland JUCO men’s and women’s basketball tournaments tip off today and a doubleheader is scheduled at Allegany College of Maryland’s Bob Kirk Arena.
Allegany is the No. 4 seed in the women’s field and will host No. 13 Southern Maryland at 5 o’clock in the opener.
The Lady Trojans finished the regular season 17-7 overall and 10-3 in the conference. They had a 10-game winning streak snapped by Hagerstown last week, but enter the JUCO Tournament having won their last two games.
The Trojans routed Southern Maryland during the regular season by a 63-19 score.
Also today, No. 12 Garrett (7-16, 2-11) plays at No. 5 Prince George’s (14-7, 9-4) in a women’s first-round game at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will play the Allegany/Southern Maryland winner on Thursday.
The Allegany men take on Garrett in tonight’s 7 o’clock game in a rematch of their regular-season game that the Trojans won in overtime.
Allegany, 16-10 overall and 11-5 in the conference, got the No. 3 seed while Garrett, 13-13 and 5-11, is the No. 14 seed.
The Trojans, after a 90-89 win and season sweep of top-seeded Hagerstown last week, dropped back-to-back games at Rockville and Anne Arundel to end the regular season. Garrett is 3-3 in its last six games.
Allegany beat Garrett in their only regular season meeting, 84-76 in overtime, at ACM on Dec. 3.
The tournament shifts to Frederick Community College on Thursday. Tournament pairings are listed in today’s Scoreboard section.
