FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge High School will host the Maryland Region 1A-2A West Region Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday, with 20 schools from Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett and Washington counties competing and the top four individual place winners advancing to the Maryland State Wrestling Championships next weekend at the University of Maryland’s Cole Field House.
Session I wrestling on Friday will begin with the preliminary matches at 5 p.m followed by the quarterfinal matches at 6 p.m. Saturday's Session II wrestling will start with the championship semifinals at 10 a.m. followed by the consolation quarterfinals at noon and the consolation semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Session III will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the fifth and third-place matches and conclude with the championships at 6 p.m.
Admission is $5 per session for anyone seven years of age or older. An all-session passes will be sold at $12. Only MPSSAA passes will be accepted.
Five undefeated wrestlers are entered in the tournament: Winters Mill’s Cody Sharkey with a 39-0 record, Catoctin’s Collin Schildt at 35-0, Williamsport’s Zack Shoemaker at 33-0, Middletown’s Judd Ziegler at 39-0, and Mountain Ridge’s defending state champion Jason Wright at 36-0.
Winters Mill won last year’s state championship and this year's dual meet state championship.
Thirty area wrestlers from the following schools qualified for this weekend’s West Regional, with Mountain Ridge leading the way with 10: Cody Matthews, seeded No. 4 in the 106-pound weight class; Jacob Taylor, No. 4 in 113; Adam Martz, No. 1 in 126; Tyler Maynard, No. 9 in 132; George Martin, No. 6 in 145; Evan Deckers, No. 9 in 152; Phil Shifflett, No. 7 in 160; Abe Macklin, No. 9 in 195; Wright, No. 1 in 195; and Shane Phillips, No. 2 in 220.
Southern, who edged Mountain Ridge by a half-point to win the Bi-County Championships last weekend at Northern, has qualified nine wrestlers for this weekend’s regional: Austin Shaffer, No. 3 in 106; Garrett Beachy, No. 8 in 113; Joshua King, No. 9 in 120; Gavin Murphy, No. 6 in 126; Dakota Pritt, No. 9 in 138; Mikey Skipper, No. 4 in 152; Scott Cooper, No. 5 in 160; Cody Rasel, No. 9 in 195; and Kevin Miller, No. 4 in 285.
Northern, which finished third in the Bi-County, will send seven wrestlers to the mats this weekend, including top seeds in their respective classes, Justin Opel in 120 pounds and Kody Osselburn in 132.
The Huskies’ Tyler Owens is seeded ninth in 145, Sean Kamp sixth in 152, Zach Merrill eighth in 170, Zach Meyers fourth in 220 and Justin Durst sixth in 285.
For Fort Hill, Tristen Tressler is seeded No. 8 in 106, Dillon Darr No. 2 in 138 and Cody Arigo No. 7 in 182.
Allegany’s Garrett Bittinger is seeded No. 7 in 170 pounds.
