ACM wins, 90-89

Trojans hold off Hawks to sweep series

CUMBERLAND — Casey Roberts scored 27 points to lead six Allegany College players in double figures and the Trojans handed Hagerstown its first Maryland JUCO Conference loss in a 90-89 thriller Tuesday evening at Bob Kirk Arena.
The win gives coach Mike Baker’s team a sweep of the rival Hawks, having won earlier in the year at Hagerstown by 86-78. Allegany, 14-2 in its last 16 games, is 16-8 overall and 11-3 in the conference.
Hagerstown fell to 21-4 overall and 15-1 in the conference.
Ricky Mosley added 14 points, Sam Dale had 13, six rebounds and five assists, Cam Johnson 12 points, Chris Day 10 points and nine assists and Darrion Tillman 10 points for the Trojans.
Hagerstown had five double-figure scorers, led by Devin Miller with 22 points. Tione Womack had 16, Antonio Jenifer 14 and Alister Chisholm and Raymar Watson 13 each.
“I’m really proud of the guys. They really played as a team and really played hard,’’ said Baker.
The Trojans overcame a five-point (39-34) halftime deficit by scoring 56 points in the second half.
Roberts went 4 for 4 from three-point range in the second half, and finished 5 for 6.
“We had a lot of turnovers in the first half. We were trying to put the ball on the floor instead of passing it,’’ admitted Baker. “In the second half, Casey hit the three-pointers and that kind of got us going. And our foul shooting was great down the stretch.”
Hagerstown led 87-84 after a shot in the lane by Jenifer with under three minutes left. Tillman hit a jumper, then drew a big charging foul from Jenifer seconds later.
The defensive stop by Tillman led to a bucket by Roberts that put the Trojans ahead for good, 88-87.
Johnson blocked a shot on the defensive end, then scored on a putback off the offensive glass to make it 90-87 with 57 seconds to go.
Chisholm scored for Hagerstown with five seconds left. Allegany missed the front end of a one-and-one — the only missed free throw of the second half by the Trojans — but a final shot by Womack missed the mark at the buzzer.
Hagerstown hit eight three-point goals and Allegany had seven. The big difference came at the foul line, where the Hawks were 3 for 7 and the Trojans 17 of 20, with Dale leading the way by going 6 for 6.
Allegany plays a makeup game on Thursday night at Montgomery-Rockville.
