O’Neal, FH beat Keyser

No. 1 Sentinels take control in second half, win 50-40

CUMBERLAND — Top-ranked Fort Hill created some breathing room during the third quarter as the Sentinels fended off a persistent Keyser team for a 50-40 win during an Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference match-up Monday in Cumberland.

Fort Hill led most of the evening, carrying a 12-11 advantage into the second period and 20-17 at halftime. The Sentinels then outscored the No. 3 Golden Tornado 23-13 during the third period to enter the final quarter ahead 43-30.

Three girls scored in double figures during the win with Ashley O’Neal’s 14-point effort leading the way. Besides the points, O’Neal also added six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Alyssia Twigg added 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals and Sarah Lowery came through with 10 points.

Mariah James finished with nine points, seven boards and three steals.

The Golden Tornado were led in scoring by Lexi Carr’s 11 points. Carley Grady added eight points.

Katie Tasker scored nine points during Keyser’s 40-25 junior varsity victory. Troie York led Fort Hill with eight.

Fort Hill (14-4, 11-1 AMAC) puts its No. 1 ranking on the line when it hosts No. 2 Southern on Wednesday. Keyser (12-6, 8-5) plays at Allegany on Wednesday.

OAKLAND — The second-ranked Southern Rams came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat No. 4 Frankfort at home Monday night.

Frankfort stymied Southern’s offense early on, holding them to just eight first-quarter points.

Southern managed to score 11 in the second but Frankfort was able to open up a 10-point lead going into the locker room.

The Rams started the second half much faster, besting Frankfort 18-10 in the third to pull within two.

The wheels fell off for the Falcons in the final minutes as Southern survived with the five-point win.

Hannah Horne scored 17 and Alycia Horner had 15 to lead Southern.

For Frankfort, Saydi Whiteman had a game-high 27 points.

In the jayvee game, Southern won 52-42 led by Alicia Roth’s 28 points. Ashley Noah scored 21 for the Falcons.

Frankfort sits at 11-7 and hosts Mountain Ridge Wednesday at 7:30.

Southern (13-6) plays at Fort Hill Wednesday at 7:30.

ACCIDENT — Hannah Carl sank five three-pointers en route to a game-high 25 points to lead Hampshire over Northern Monday evening in the Huskies’ gymnasium.

Carl helped the Trojans dominate the Huskies by making nine baskets and going 2-of-3 from the line. Carl had two of her threes in the first half and the remainer in the second half.

“They killed us on the glass,” said Northern head coach Ron Opel. “They got a lot of second chance points.

“Carl was on all night,” Opel said. “It didn’t matter what we did to her, she still managed to score.”

Alexis Nickleson added 11 points, Sierrah Bloomquist eight and Autumn Chaney had seven.

Northern got a double-double from Allison Yommer who had 19 points and 11 rebounds. She made five baskets, including one three-pointer, and was perfect on eight trips to the free-throw line.

Kirsten Rayner scored nine and Kiersten Butler had seven.

Northern won the junior varsity game 29-25 as Natalie Johnson had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Emi Corbin scored 11 for Hampshire.

Hampshire (12-6 overall, 6-6 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conferece) hosts Bishop Walsh Thursday evening. Northern (3-15, 1-13 AMAC) visits Preston tonight.

CRESAPTOWN — Savannah Reed had 14 points, seven steals and five assists and JoJo Carr added 13 points and 10 rebounds for fifth-ranked Calvary in a rout of Paw Paw Monday at Calvary.

The game was never in doubt after Paw Paw was held without a point in the first quarter.

The Pirates scored four in the second but by that time Calvary had a 26-point advantage.

Everyone on Calvary’s roster played and scored as it pulled away in the second half for a big win.

Moriah Peters also scored 14 points for the the Lady Eagles.

Alivia Snyder led Paw Paw with four.

Calvary is 14-3 overall and undefeated on the year at home. That record will be tested by 15-1 Heritage tonight, 5:30, at Calvary.
