— Group swim lessons offered at YMCA

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland YMCA is offering an expanded schedule of swim classes this fall for beginner, intermediate or advanced swimmers.

Lessons for swimmers just beginning are offered for all age groups. Perch is an introductory class offered for preschool ages and requires a parent to be in the water with his or her child during instruction of the first three classes. In addition to the Perch class preschool swimmers ages 3-6 can register for our Pike class which teaches basic paddle stroke and kicking skills. Children 7 to 12 years of age will be offered the Polliwog class and a class for teens and adults is available.

The YMCA offers an intermediate level, as well. The Eel and Ray classes are for pre-schoolers ages 3-6. Ray students should be able to swim comfortably on their front and back with little need for floatation devices. Guppy and Minnow classes are designed for youth 7 to 12 years of age, and the YMCA offers instruction for the intermediate Teen or adult as well.

For the experienced swimmer, the Starfish (3 to 6 years old), Fish (7 to 12 years old), and an advanced class for teens and adults are available. In addition to specific strokes and swimming skills, students will learn various diving maneuvers and practice water safety procedures.

Classes run for seven weeks and are held once a week. The registration fee for pre-school is $30 for Y members and $60 for the community while the youth lesson fee is $35 for Y members and $65 for the community. Financial assistance is available and information is available at the front desk.

Swim lessons at the Cumberland YMCA are offered Tuesday and or Thursday, 5:30 to 7:40 p.m., and on Saturday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Classes begin the week of Sept. 13 and run through Oct. 28. Registration is now open and classes are limited to six participants each.

PVAA monthly meeting tonight

CRESAPTOWN — The Potomac Valley Athletic Association will hold its regular monthly meeting today, 8 p.m., at the Cresaptown Fire Hall. Any person with interest in the organization should attend the meeting.

Keyser/Fort Hill football game Saturday

KEYSER, W.Va. — The Keyser versus Fort Hill football game will be played at Alumni Field at Tornado Alley Saturday evening. The gates will open at 6:00 pm and the game will begin at 7:00 pm. Admission at the gate for all fall sporting events will $5 for adults and students. Discount tickets will be available for students to purchase on Friday. The advance student tickets will be $4. Those ticket may be purchased before school and during all lunches.

A bus will shuttle fans to the game from Keyser Assembly of God Church beside Wal-Mart. The bus will shuttle to the game from 5:30 until the start of the game. There will not be a cost for the shuttle. The bus will begin to shuttle fans back to the church at the beginning of the fourth-quarter. The shuttle will drop-off and pick-up the front of the school.

CUMBERLAND — Any coach wishing to nominate a player for the James Conley Award, or for any other outstanding achievements throughout the season must do so no later than Sept. 25.

CUMBERLAND — The Western Maryland Shufflebowl League will meet tonight at The Goodfellowship Club at 6 p.m. All teams participating this season must be represented.

Fore Sisters MGA plays 2-ball tourney

RAWLINGS — The Fore Sisters MGA played a best two-ball tournament on Wednesday with the team of Greg Miller, Junior O'Neal, Jim Powell and Ed Dawson finishing first at net 109. At 113, Dale Cosner, John Tuppine, Ed Baldwin and Charlie Neus finished second. Pin winners were Tony Williams. (No. 4), John Tipping (7 and 15), Butch Rowley (9), Cosner (11) and Powell (18). Thursday night’s scramble will start at 5 p.m.

Valley View Srs. report Wednesday outing

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — The group of Glen Spaid, Richard Cooper, Jim Michael, and Wendell Hott managed 11-under par to take first place at the Valley View Senior golf outing on Wednesday.

Four teams tied at 8-under with Gary Crane, Dennie Dunlap, George Evans, and Sam Riley taking second in a card off. Also at 8-under and taking third place were Ben Fout, Richard Eye, Gene Dellinger, and Jim Casto. Pin winners were Dellinger, Cooper, Riley, Jerry Bartley, and Ken Ayers.

Pinewackers outing decided in card off

KEYSER, W.Va. — Frank Shepherd, John Dean, Ed Mickey and Ron Yutzy beat Chuck Davis, Curtis Clary, Butch Ack and Phil Vance in a card off with a 59 to win the latest Pinewackers outing at Polish Pines Golf Club.

Shepherd (No. 2), Davis (No. 4, No. 8) and Ken Griffith (No. 6) were pin winners.

Grasshoppers play Polish Pines outing

KEYSER, W.Va. —The team of Dick Horn, Dave Vanmeter, Greg Snyder, Dan Sears, Mike McLuckie and Shirley Buskirk shot a 55 to win Tuesday’s Western Maryland Grasshopper outing at Polish Pines Golf Course.

Second, with a 56, was Joe Stone, Al Witt, Don Shriner, Ebb Spiker, Paul Bear and Bob Sharp, while finishing third, also with a 56, was Bob Llewellyn, Dale Burgess, Glenn Miller, George Pew, Norm Filsinger . The pin winners for the outing were Mark Malone (No. 2), Larry Bookwater (No. 4), Mike Tipton (No. 6), Rob Ferguson (No. 8), Frank Shepherd (No. 11), Joe Stone (No. 13), Butch Rankan (No, 15) and John Kady (No. 17).
