FSU shuts out Franciscan

Russell’s goal, 2 assists helps Bobcats win 7th straight

From Staff Reports

TUEBENVILLE, Ohio — Junior Lauren Russell scored a goal and added two assists as the Frostburg State women’s soccer team capped its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular season with a 5-0 shutout of Franciscan Wednesday.

The Bobcats (15-3, 9-1) ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak with their 13th shutout. FSU has also won 11 of its last 12 games. Frostburg State kicks off 2009 AMCC Tournament play on Saturday, when it hosts Hilbert at 4:30 p.m.

Russell now needs just one goal and one assist to tie the single-season school records in both categories. Last Saturday, she set the single-season school record for points in a season.

Frostburg State dominated Franciscan (6-10-1, 4-6), possessing the ball in the Barons half of the field for much of the contest. The Bobcats attempted 33 shots and limited Franciscan to six.

Freshman Amanda Wharton scored first in the ninth minute for a 1-0 lead. The goal, a low shot off a feed from junior Shonna Ferree, is her 21st of the year and puts her in a tie for third place in a single-season in school history.

Sophomore Erin Ford scored in the upper right corner off the foot of Russell for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Frostburg State scored two goals in a three minute span early in the second half. Just under four minutes into the period, Russell scored an unassisted goal in the low left corner. At 51:58, Russell assisted senior Lauren Lentine’s goal.

Senior Christine Fitzgerald scored with a high centered shot off a feed from Kaleigh Herring.

Sophomore Michelle Buckmaster and freshman Jessica Flewellyn split time in goal and held the Barons scoreless.
