NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Anthony King and Anton Wade scored two touchdowns to power Frostburg State to its first win of the year, a 35-30 victory over Apprentice School in an Atlantic Central Football Conference game Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (1-8, 1-1) scored three touchdowns in the second quarter for a 28-10 lead at the break. The Builders (1-8, 0-3) made a late charge with 20 points over the finals two quarters to draw within five points, but FSU recovered an onside kick with less than a minute to go to seal the win.
Frostburg State scored touchdowns on four of six first-half possessions and capitalized on an Apprentice fumble at the FSU 37 late in the second quarter.
The Builders outgained the Bobcats in total yards (367-262) and yards passing (284-211) but couldn't overcome four turnovers.
Josh Volpe finished the game 19-of-28 for 211 yards and a touchdown while Phil Caralla was 19-of-30 for 284 yards and two scores. Terryl Monroe led the FSU defense with nine tackles, two forced fumbles, a pass breakup and the second quarter fumble recovery.
Frostburg State ends its regular season Saturday in the 11th annual Regents Cup game against rival Salisbury at 1 p.m.
WVU 17, Louisville 9
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Jarrett Brown threw a touchdown pass but managed little offense and West Virginia struggled to beat Louisville 17-9 on Saturday.
Running back Noel Devine played sparingly after tweaking an ankle and the Mountaineers (7-2, 3-1 Big East) were outgained 301-273, but improved to 6-0 at home. Devine was limited to 56 yards on 13 carries to surpass 1,000 yards for the second straight season.
Louisville (3-6, 0-4) couldn’t take advantage of Darius Ashley’s 164 yards rushing and fell to 0-5 on the road. Redshirt freshman Will Stein went 14-of-26 in his first road start but was sacked five times.
Cardinals kicker Chris Philpott made field goals of 37, 44 and 29 yards.
Jock Sanders gained 29 yards on the first drive of the second half and freshman Tavon Austin capped it with a 9-yard touchdown run for a 14-6 lead.
Louisville’s Cory Goettsche shanked two straight punts in the third quarter and one of them led to a West Virginia field goal. After Goettsche’s second short punt, Brown couldn’t handle a high snap and Louisville’s L.D. Scott recovered at the West Virginia 42.
But a holding call erased a 10-yard TD pass from Stein to Doug Beaumont early in the fourth and the Cardinals settled for a short field goal to trail 17-9.
N.C. State 38, Maryland 31
RALEIGH, N.C. — Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns and ran for another, and North Carolina State snapped a four-game losing streak by holding off Maryland in a matchup of the ACC Atlantic Division’s worst teams.
Wilson was 25-for-38 for 343 yards and the Wolfpack (4-5, 1-4) made just enough plays to secure their second win against a Bowl Subdivision opponent. Both teams combined for 752 total yards.
Wilson overcame a career-worst three interceptions with touchdown tosses of 17 yards to George Bryan, 35 yards to Donald Bowens and 18 yard to Darrell Davis. Wilson and Jamelle Eugene each had 2-yard scoring runs.
Torrey Smith returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, the school-record third of his career. Alex Wujciak returned an interception 70 yards for a score, while Davin Meggett and Chris Turner had 1-yard TD runs for Maryland (2-7, 1-4).
Maryland has lost four straight and seven of eight.
Ohio State 24, Penn State 7
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Terrelle Pryor threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in his return to his home state and No. 15 Ohio State won a duel of the Big Ten’s top two defenses with a victory against No. 11 Penn State on Saturday.
The Buckeyes (8-2, 5-1 Big Ten) got an added bonus, too: a tie for the conference lead with Iowa after Northwestern handed the Hawkeyes their first loss of the season.
Left for dead in the Big Ten after a demoralizing loss at Purdue last month, Ohio State’s hopes for a fifth straight league title look much brighter. A showdown with Iowa at the Horseshoe awaits next week.
Pryor’s 62-yard touchdown pass to Devier Posey deflated the hostile crowd and gave Ohio State a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter.
Daryll Clark had the only score for Penn State (8-2, 4-2) with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
