PRINCE FREDERICK — Jermaine Hunter had Allegany in his sights all evening and the Campers couldn’t overcome two miscues on special teams to fall 37-30 to Calvert for their second loss of the season.
Hunter had the Campers guessing on the spread option and the Cavaliers returned two kickoffs in the second half to do in a stubborn Allegany bunch. Finishing with 115 yards rushing, Hunter also did plenty of damage with his arm, completing his biggest pass on a busted play on the winning drive to set Calvert up two yards from the go-ahead score. Mikey Bowen went 90 yards on the second-half kickoff, and Datavious Thomas covered 80 yards later in the third as the Cavs scored on three big plays.
Allegany quarterback Carter Imes took off to pick up 20 yards on third down and put the ball at the Calvert 35-yard line.
On the next third down, the Campers went to Imes again, finding Brady Hillegas down inside the Cavaliers 10, but the ball was fumbled and Calvert recovered for the first turnover of the night.
The Campers had a total of four turnovers, but continued to bounce back each time.
M.J. Wallace tore off a big chunk of yards early in the drive, running into Allegany territory and giving the Cavaliers a fresh set of downs. Wallace got another first down on a nine-yard run, using a stiff arm to dispose of a Camper tackler to take the ball to the Allegany 32.
The Campers stiffened, though, coming up with two big stops on third and fourth downs to force a turnover. They went back to Imes early in the next drive as he hit Chris Fram for nine yards and a first down, then picked up the first down on a sneak to give Allegany a first down at the 35-yard line. Fram caught a first down on the next play, picking up exactly 10 yards.
After converting on fourth down, Madison Wolford finished the drive with a one-yard run to make it 6-0 with 8:31 remaining. Wolford led the Campers by rushing for 82 yards on 20 carries.
The Cavaliers didn’t let Allegany celebrate for too long, taking just one play to score on their next possession. Hunter kept it himself, made one guy miss and outran everyone else for a 75-yard touchdown.
Allegany wouldn’t stay down and answered with a big play of its own when Imes threw to Hillegas for 55 yards to the 15-yard line. Wolford pushed the Cavs down to the one on a trap up the middle, and was rewarded on the next play for his second touchdown. He also added the two-point run to tie the game at 14.
Calvert drove down the field using the option, converting a fourth down on its way to a first and goal at the five. Hunter eventually slashed through the line and into the end zone from four yards out with 1:26 left before halftime.
Looking to tie the score, Allegany got something going in the middle of the third quarter. Imes hit Fram for a first down on fourth-and-4, and Thomas finished the series with a 12-yard run. Hayden Bosley caught the two-point pass to tie the score with 2:12 left in the third quarter.
Thomas returned his kickoff with 2:01 left in the third, putting Allegany right back into the hole.
Another turnover, this time a fumble, ended a long Allegany drive at the Calvert 25, but the Campers helped cause a fumble on an option exchange to get the ball right back. Allegany worked its way down to the one-yard line, where on third down Wade McGee punched in the score. Thomas walked into the end zone on the two-point conversion to give the Campers a 30-29 lead.
With Calvert scoring quickly, Allegany was able to build an 11-minute edge in time of possession, 29:35 to 18:35.
The Cavs put the ball back in Hunter’s hands and he didn’t disappoint. He worked his team into Camper territory and then came up with a big play to Thomas where he avoided multiple defenders in the backfield before throwing a completion down to the two-yard line. Hunter finished the drive on the next play.
Allegany (5-2) was able to get to the Calvert 26, but a sack with two seconds left ended any chane for the Campers.
Allegany plays Northern at home on Friday.
