CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland man who pleaded guilty to robbing people last January at the Country Club Mall and the downtown Holiday Inn was sentenced Friday to serve 27 years in prison for the crimes, according to State’s Attorney Michael O. Twigg.
Woodrow Tavon Devon Small, 33, of Cumberland and formerly of Baltimore, was sentenced by Judge W. Timothy Finan to 15 years each on three counts of robbery with six of those years suspended. The sentences are to be served consecutively, resulting in nine actual years of incarceration on each count and a total prison term of 27 years.
Upon completion of the prison term, Small will be placed on five years of supervised probation.
The convictions arose from Small robbing three separate victims over a several-day period in January 2010.
Prior to sentencing, some of the victims testified how the crimes had impacted their lives, said Twigg, who prosecuted the case.
Local attorneys Rebecca Freeland and C. Trent Thomas represented Small.
It was Jan. 10 when Small was arrested after attacking a LaVale couple who were entering the Country Club Mall at about 6 p.m. A 68-year-old male victim struggled with Small and was able to grab a knife from Small’s hand. The victim’s wife called 911 and police arrested Small a short time later when he was found hiding under a vehicle.
Small was also convicted of the robbery of a person at the Holiday Inn that also occurred on Jan. 10.
In addition, Small was convicted of robbing a female victim who was robbed of her purse and punched in the face on Jan. 3 at the mall.
Small was returned to the Allegany County Detention Center to await being placed into the custody of the Division of Correction.
