Hi. My name is William Taccino. I have lived and worked in Allegany County all my life. I attended Mount Savage High School and Allegany Community College and have operated my own business here and in Mineral County, and was also employed by the U.S. government.
I am seeking a position as Allegany County commissioner because I believe the citizens and taxpayers of Allegany County have suffered long enough. We can learn a lot from our past mistakes by realizing the problems and working to correct them in the future. We can’t change the past, but we must make the future better. County government needs not just a complete overhaul, but a frame-off restoration, as they say in the antique car business, in order to restore it properly.
Citizens input is very crucial to running government properly. I believe we need to close the communication gap between citizens and county government. We, as elected officials, must listen to the voice of the citizens and taxpayers. Elected officials are elected to serve, not dictate to people.
Raising taxes is not the answer. People in our county are struggling to survive, like many across the country. If elected, I will try to help rebuild the financial structure of our county government. Economic development has failed us.
I will travel to other counties and cities like Washington and Frederick counties and Hagerstown and Winchester, at my own expense, if necessary, to personally meet with business people, commissioners and mayors to exchange ideas, to see how to start new businesses, and to encourage our existing business toward economic growth, and to create new and better-paying jobs. I have been in contact with a businessman in Winchester, Va., whom I would like to start business ventures in Allegany County and thereby, create new jobs. We need additional revenue. Tourism will not carry the load.
I have been in conversation with the White House and would like to help employ some of President Barrack Obama’s ideas on jobs, financial strategy and making the best use of our stimulus money with the federal and state programs available, and also working with the governor’s office, giving us a better bang for our bucks, including public safety by restoring the sheriff’s original duties to office. I would downsize the Bureau of Police to operate under Homeland Security using any federal funding available. We also need to take advantage of the pay-as-you train programs working with such agencies as the Western Maryland Consortium.
We must help those citizens who are paying ridiculous water bills in other parts of the county. This could possibly be done by seeking low interest financing and federal funding to pay off this project and thereby relieve them of this unjust burden.
We must also readdress the public transportation issue to provide service to all parts of he county where needed.
We must also address the proper maintenance of our county roads.
Together, with God’s help, we can make the needed difference. Don’t vote for a politician, but for a worker and a fighter.
I need your prayers, votes and help. Thank you.
