Cumberland —
CUMBERLAND — A local family’s donation of land just outside Cumberland will benefit hundreds of local Scouts, according to The Potomac Council, Boy Scouts of America.
The donation of 37 acres of land located on state Route 51 between Mexico Farms Road and PPG Road came from the Tashenberg family and was finalized in July. The acreage was owned by the Tashenberg family for many years and was farm land for much of that time.
“The Tashenbergs contacted us and were looking to give the land away primarily because they weren’t using it,” said local Scout Executive Don Olsen. “This way, they don’t have to continue paying taxes on the land since they weren’t using it and doing nothing with it. They were trying to sell it for a while, but with the way the economy is today it wasn’t going anywhere.”
Olsen said that the Scouts do not yet know what the land is worth since it has not been appraised.
“Currently, our executive board is reviewing what we’ll be able to do with the land,” said Olsen. “Originally we’ll be using it for nature studies for our youth, so they can go in and study nature and plant life there.”
Council President Doug Schwab said that the council is delighted to have the donation.
“We see it as a place where Scouts can go and study nature,” said Schwab. “The ground has a lot of different types of wetlands. It seems like it would be a great place for Scouts to do some learning.”
“We’re not sure what to do with it yet. We’ve just recently gotten it, and we have to see,” said Schwab. “We look at it as an investment, and as we go down the road, the possibilities are endless.”
Attempts to contact the Tashenberg family were unsuccessful.
