DEER PARK — Winds gusting to 50 mph hampered numerous volunteer firefighters who battled a fire in a log home on state Route 135 near Pysell Cut Road just east of Deer Park early Sunday, according to Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ken Collins.
The unoccupied residence of Joe and Mary Ellen Ingram of 6624 Maryland Highway was destroyed after fire reportedly broke out in an office area of the 1 1/2 story dwelling.
There were no injuries in the 4:14 a.m. blaze.
“A sheriff’s deputy on patrol actually discovered the fire and when we got to the fire station you could see the glow in the sky,” said Collins, who directed the firefighting operation that involved about 30 volunteers.
“The worst part was the wind. It was a killer for us. In fact, the wind blew the fire out the other end of the house,” said Collins.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Fire investigators arrived at the scene at about daybreak to attempt to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.
Although no dollar figure was available concerning the extent of property loss, Collins said, “It was a total loss to the building and its contents.”
Deer Park, Oakland, Kitzmiller, Bittinger, Bloomington, Elk Garden and Deep Creek volunteer fire departments were on the scene for approximately three hours along with the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad and the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, according to the Garrett County 911 center.
