CUMBERLAND — As summer begins winding to a close, area residents are enacting last-minute summer plans and preparing for the coming of the brisk Western Maryland autumn and winter.
“I haven’t really thought about my plans for the last weeks of summer,” said Beverly Sines, 53, of Oakland. “There’ll be another month or so of warm weather, but I’m looking forward to fall and the Autumn Glory Festival.”
Sines said she enjoyed the warm weather in the summer.
Karen Starkey, 55, of Keyser, W.Va., said she plans to do a weekend trip to Weston, W.Va.
“It’s a birthday celebration for my 17-year-old daughter,” said Starkey, who added that she won’t miss the summer heat.
“I’m a quiet person when it comes to summer plans,” said Donney Harris, 46, from Fort Ashby, W.Va. “This season’s been the same as it is every year.”
Harris said that he prefers the fall.
Jeremy Swafford, 26, of Cumberland said that he also had no plans.
“I’m ready for it to cool off,” said Swafford. “This season I stayed in the Cumberland area. I didn’t have any big plans.”
Thirty-year-old Ashley Dashiell of Cumberland said she plans to find a new job.
“I’ve went to the Career Center ... and I hope to get a job,” said Dashiell. “I’m just enjoying what’s left of summer.”
Dashiell said she loved fall and summer and that she skis during the winter.
“I don’t have any plans since I’m retired,” said Harland Carlson, 69, of Oakland. “I think we need some rain very badly though.”
Carlson said he’s hoping for snow this winter because he enjoys cross-country skiing.
“I enjoy the snow since I don’t have to drive in it, it doesn’t bother me,” said Carlson.
