CUMBERLAND — Former Cumberland Mayor Frank Nethken is the 16th candidate for Allegany County commissioner.
Nethken, 80, filed last week as a write-in candidate for the Nov. 2 general election. Eight Republicans and seven Democrats are vying to finish in the top three in voting in their respective party in the Sept. 14 primary election. Those six candidates will advance to the Nov. 2 general election with Nethken.
Nethken served as the Queen City’s mayor from 1978 to 1982. Since then, he has unsuccessfully run for councilman, mayor, county commissioner, the U.S. House of Representatives and president. Nethken also filed to run for the U.S. Senate but later withdrew from that race.
Nethken is a Navy veteran who retired from CSX. He also has worked as a real estate agent.
Write-in candidates have until Oct. 27 to register with the local or state Board of Elections office.
