Keyser —
KEYSER, W.Va. — Mineral County plans to consolidate two of its voting precincts beginning with the Nov. 2 general election.
Under the consolidation plan, voters in Precinct 6, Hartmansville, will become part of Precinct 8 and vote at Elk Garden Primary School. The county will no longer maintain a polling place in Hartmansville.
County Clerk Lauren Ellifritz said she’s faced problems finding poll workers to staff the Hartmansville location for the past three elections and called in alternates each time. But that’s not the only difficulty with the location.
“The precinct does not have running water, so we do have to have a Porta-John up there,” she said. “And it is not handicapped accessible.”
Ellifritz presented the plan to the county commission on Aug. 10. The commission is expected to issue an order finalizing the consolidation at its Sept. 14 meeting.
“I think it’s good government to try to be efficient, and the inconvenience is reasonable,” said Commission President Wayne Spiggle.
Ellifritz acknowledged voters may experience some inconvenience because of the change, but said previous consolidations have worked “very well.”
The county consolidated six precincts into three in 2006. Ellifritz attributed those consolidations to issues with polling locations, finding poll workers, and voter turnout.
There are 260 registered voters in Precinct 6, and 42 turned out to vote in the spring primary election, Ellifritz said. With 427 registered voters in Precinct 8, the consolidated precinct would contain less than 700 registered voters.
All registered voters in Precinct 6 should receive a notice of the change in the mail.
