HRDC grant to benefit seniors

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Human Resources Development Commission will be awarded a $39,952 grant to support senior volunteer activities in Allegany County, Cumberland Mayor Brian Grim announced.

Funding is from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The funds are made available as part of a competitive grant process for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, one of three Senior Corps programs administered by CNCS. Established in 1971, RSVP engages Americans age 55 and older in volunteer opportunities across the country. These volunteers are a critical resource in response to everything from hunger to natural disasters, and even regionally with food banks and in local state parks.

“Community service and volunteering are a valuable resource for communities, contributing to solutions for some of the most pressing challenges facing our community,” said Grim.

The grant is one of 206 RSVP awards provided to volunteer organizations across the country to support senior volunteer activities.

HRDC has operated the RSVP program since 2009 and currently has 318 volunteers enrolled at 37 locations in Allegany and Garrett County. To learn more about the program, contact coordinator Michael Cassidy at 301-783-1755 or go to www.allegany-hrdc.org.
